I just hooked up a single 54W T5 bulb over my tank, I can't believe how bright it actually is.

would sure be nice if at the end of the salt survey something could be done to end this debate -- well not end it -- debate is good -- but provide some solid objective facts.

I like the way you think, Nick. :D

There is no debate for people who have actually tried T5's. :p

i think if you dont overdrive you get 2 years... i may be mistaken.

Im hoping to get me some of the 80 watt blue plus;'s for my 125 so i can get rid of the 14K mh and go with a 65K but still have the color.. now i just have to come across some dirt cheep ballasts hehe

I'm not trying to be pigheaded just trying to learn

So a 54W T-5

Uses Less electricity
Produces more coral usable light
and generates less waste heat

than a 75W VHO

ChrisB, the 6500K T5's can't really be compared to the Blue Plus, one is a yellow/white light and the other is blue.

The 6500 will be brighter, but a very different color spectrum.
Typically, from my understanding, the lower range bulbs (6500, 10000k) are brighter at the same watts as the more blue bulbs (14k, 20000k, actinics).

Coral useable light might be debateable.
I would guess you're talking about the PAR (photosynthetic ...something... radiation), I would think the VHO bulbs have a higher PAR, but the T5's look better and probably come close enough in PAR to not be a big deal.

i've been told that the aquablues have the highest par when compared to blue+ and actinic, fwiw. don't know how you can qualitatively compare 'brightness,' since i've never had all three types at the same time.

Im going to say yes from what iv read and seen with my lights... but its never been officialy tested i dont think...

It would be easy to do just find someone with a Par meter and a power meter *nudges reef savers* hehe

I am completely speculating with that statement though. I am sold on the T5's wether or not they can compete with the PAR of the VHO bulbs.
My corals appear to like them, and I definitely like them.

We debated for awhile what to put over our new (mikesters old) 75gallon. I almost went with a 4 bulb VHO retro. But with some help from RC and some coaching from Mike we went with the 4 x 54w t5 retro from reefgeek. We have 2 blue+ and two aquablue special. The tank is absolutley beautiful. The Zoas have the nicest florese to them, as do the other corals. We couldn't be happier, and highly recommend the t5's
