I'm putting together my thoughts for the lighting of a 270g project I'm about to start. I have been using LED on my 150 for a few months now and everything is looking nice but I think I'm going to add more SPS to the new system. The few SPS I have in the 150 are doing well and growing although I'm told they might grow better under MH. Since I have a few MH fixtures and ballast in my "aquarium supply" closet, I was thinking of incorporating them into my new set up.

The LED's I'm running are the AquaSTAR 165W LED Aquarium Light Dimmable. The tank is 7 feet long so I was thinking of 3 175w MH (that's what I have) and 2 or 3 or the LEDs depending on fit.

Is anyone doing anything like this? IF so what are your results? Am I just going off the deep end on this one.

I use 2x 400w 14k Ushios on galaxy ballasts, plus a reefbreeder's value fixture and a Reefbrite 4-foot strip. It's a good combo. LED's look good but I have slightly more coral success with MH. T5s are great I'm sure. Providing a nice mixed spectrum of light is a good goal.

I hope to add a 4-foot or 5-foot Buildmyled striplight eventually. My tank in June: https://goo.gl/photos/crzX2wJr66pTXQoz8

I've been looking at the BML strips as well. I have (3) 250w radiums on a 6ft tank but looking for some more pop. Don't get me wrong love the color just want to bring out some of the fluorescence.

Anyone have a similar combo?

I'm using (2) 250 watt MH with radium 20k bulbs and running 3 hydra hd's for the color. It works well and colors pop. I like the blues obviously....I run the LEDs for the color, not the growth. Some have had success with LEDs only but I'm too hard headed to give up MH.:smash:

I'm assuming you all have seen the light set-up and SPS growth in the display peninsula at Oceanlife Aquariums.

FYI, BML is closing their doors to the aquarium trade and focusing on horticulture.

I'm running mh and led on my nano. It's pretty nice. I still prefer having some T5 in the mix though.

Whaaaat? Build My LED, LLC - Not Found has three 400 Watt 20K or 14K Ushios running concurrently with 6 radions at ~80 plus percent, according to an employee not a Nick, so need to confirm with a Nick :)

Hi jqsquared,

I run my BML super actinic reef spectrum XB series lights before and after my MH come on and off. They add a nicer color to the tank than with the MH alone.
I am going to order another one to have on hand since BML is exiting the aquarium business. Really nice lamp! Bob
