Ok, I think it's about time I look into adding some more lights to my canopy, and I'm looking for recommendations and sources for some 48" 54w bulbs and (maybe) reflectors. Cost is a factor, and i'm not looking to support sps.

I originally repeated to myself over and over "this is a fowlr, you don't need that much light". Sadly, it didn't work and I'm slowly adding some softies and shrooms, so need to keep them happy, as well as the wife's bta's.

Currently I have a two bulb 48 inch fixture in the canopy, with a 54w electronic t5ho ballast. It's rigged into a t8 fixture driving 2 38w t8 bulbs (1 zoo med 50/50 and 1 420 actinic) They are 6 months old.

I have two more t5ho fixtures with the same 54wx2 electronic ballasts, and I plan to just use them with the correct t5ho bulbs, and mount them in the canopy with the existing fixture till the t8's are done, then go with either 4 t5's,or convert the current fixture back and run 6 t5's (if desirable).

So, here's the questions. Do I need reflectors? If so,where is the best place to get 6 individual reflectors, and either 2 or 4 new bulbs that would do the job for the best price? Which bulbs would you suggest? Do I need 6 or will 4 be sufficient?

Thanks
James

couple of these ought to do.

Reef Brite 48" T5 Reflector | Premium Aquatics

Even for softies and easy corals I believe reflectors to be essential. 4 bulbs over a 55 gallon is plenty. I grew light loving acropora wonderfully using only 4 bulbs in a 55 gallon tank. 3 ati blue+ and 1 ati coral+.

bulb choice is huge too. Not all t5 bulbs are created equally.
