I keep my VHO bulb 3" from the water surface. I try to keep it as close to the water as possiable without letting any water splash on it. Make sure to use the watertight endcaps. I wipe all my bulbs (VHO and MH) with a damp towel every 2 weeks. Whenever I feel, I damp the towel with vineger or alchole.

The sides of my hood are 8". I have a railing on the inside that is 1 1/2 inch from the bottom that sits on my tank. That makes the top of the hood 6 1/2" from the water. The lights are mounted to the top of the hood but probably hang down 2 inches or so. That makes them about 4 inches off the water.
