in the last week i have been noticing that the new growth tips on my acroporas are being crushed or broken off by something in the tank and the only new thing is an emerald crab i added right before it started. emeralds are reef safe so ive read/been told/know but has anyone else had this problem?

I had the same problem with one of mine. I noticed that one of my green star polyp colonies was not opening up. A couple of days had passed when I came home and caught the little devil in the act. He was grabbing and pulling at the little purple knobs of the star polyp. I set a trap, and the next morning he was meeting his maker in the great big aquarium in the sky. A day or so later the polyps opened back up and are now good as new.

I've got one other emerald crab in that same tank but have not had the same problem with him. I posed the same question on ReefCentral and found mixed responses...some said they're evil...some have had them for years and love 'em.
