Not sure if anyone on board went this route. However, we all know vinegar prohibit bacteria growth when used as cleaning agent around the house. It's property is known to kill spore, germs, mold, etc. Hence isn't that an oxymoron to dose our tank with vinegar which in turn slow down bacteria activity instead of promoting a bloom?

That's true but only in high concentrations. Diluted its a moderately effective way to supplement carbon into our reefs. A better but more precise method us to use vodka.or better yet use biopellets.

You should try hardy noces D'or cognac. It's awesome.

Vodka, vinegar, and sugar are all good ways of supplying carbon for the tank. I think vodka has taken off lately because of how simple it is to dose and well as consistent. The ethanol in vodka is suppose to easier to break down as well. From what I've read, it takes less vodka than it does vinegar or sugar.

I having been thinking of buying a gallon jug of vodka and setting it up on a dosing pump lol. The very idea of having a bottle of vodka under my fish tank set up with dosing pump makes me and my whole family giggle like school girls. Its just so silly but seriously I'm thinking about it.

As I understand it, vinegar sees far fewer outbreaks of cyano vs vodka and biopellets. For that reason alone I'll give vinegar a try before the others.

I would do a search on Reef Central for "vinegar dosing" and start reading. Lots of great information as well as charts/articles for dosing both products.

Ok guys now you got me rolling! What's the dossing formula for vinegar or vodka per gallon?

8:1 vinegar:vodka so if you currently dose 5ml vodka you could use 40ml vodka. For 5 gallons of kalk water I add 400ml vinegar which ends up dosing approx. 80 ml of vinegar a day. In addition I dose 8 ml of vodka.

Vinegar has been noted to be less likely to cause an cyano outbreak. My problem is phosphates. Doesn't matter what I dose or even if I use bio pellets I still have issues with phosphates due to fish load so either way I have to use some type of phosphate absorbing media.

be careful on vodka dosing. some corals won't tolerate and would bleach to death even if you follow dosing recommendations. Tried it once and I would never do it again.
