It may help, but the main goal of "reef water" is to get the TDS down to zero, and then the salt mix brings in the needed components of salt water. That is why most people that make their own water use a RO/DI filter for their water.

bdubb. I have one also on my home but I use a RO/DI. What the softener is really doing is several things, removing chlorine and choramine and replacing heavy metals such as Calcium with Sodium molecules. You will still have around 100 TDS coming through after the softener. Benefits that I have seen with the softeners. Longer lasting RODI filters and cleaner tasting water, except when the softner doesnt clean itself properly and you get a mouth full of saltwater while brushing your teeth in the morning. They also increase the longevity of the pipes in your house, you wont get the funky buildup.

No - that's not appropriate as the water you'll use in a reef tank. Great as a supply source for an RODI unit however.
