I use a seatest hydrometer and it is fairly accurate...i sometimes taste the water and can tell about what salinity it is...lol I basically have my water changes down to a science: I run the ro/di machine to fill the tub/bucket then just know how many scoops of salt it takes to get it to the salinity I use. I usually test with the refractometer just to be certain though.

Can you tell how well your skimmer is functioning by tasting the skimmate? :D

Its worth either buying a refractometer off of marinedepot.com or finding someone that has one.

I used a floating hydrometer and it always read incorrectly. A friend and I split the price of a refractometer and both our salinity was dead on.

Yes, it's hard to beat a refractometer now that they can be had for 35 bucks.
