We've decided to go with the sump/refugium method with our 170g and I was wondering what the appropriate size pump would be? How many gph does it need to be and where's the best place to buy it from? (In other words, best price)

I would recommend a pump that puts out between 10x -20x times the tank size. That being said you must first make sure your overflow can handle that kind of throughput. I forgot is it drilled? 1 or two overflow boxes? What size drains?

It is drilled from the bottom in the two back corners. I need to make the overflow boxes, so that's another issue as to how big they need to be.

Karen if you decide to use a skimmer this person on Reef Central is pretty anxious to sell. Its a Beckett skimmer [The latest greatest type of skimmer] pump and waste collector for $200. They are "taking offers" right now so you could probably get it cheaper or I'd offer $200 shipped. Just a thought, good luck with the new tank
