Who here uses Purigen? I picked up some today and it just says to drop it in a micron bag and in the water. I was wondering if i should do that or open up my Fludized Bed Filter and throw it in there.

Also should I take the carbon im using out?

I tossed about 125 ml in a mesh bag last night and put it in my sump last night. I left the carbon in. So far today everything looks great.

I placed the bag in the sump at the last baffle so at least some of the water that goes past it has to go through it. I was thinking about you earlier today, in fact, wondering if you could make me some kind of little hanging basket-type thing to hang on that last baffle so I could place mesh bags of Purigen along the entire length of that baffle. Whaddya think?

Hey thats a neat idea. How long is the baffle? Ill think something up

Have you seen by any chance a place you can buy that micro mesh stuff by the yard?

Its weird how little of this stuff you use and it says its suppose to work... half a already small bottle... compaired to carbon anyway.

Yeah, really. It was hard for me to resist using the whole bottle. How great that it is rechargeable!

The baffle is 13.5 inches wide. I don't know where you can buy that material, but I'm sure I can find out with a few phone calls.

How did you keep that stuff in your Fluidized bed filter the stuff is so fine it flys everywhere in the bags.

i'm not sure how the fluidizedbed fiter you mentioned look like... i use the Phosban reactor for it (and Kevin makes these rxtrs too).
this stuff is very light so you will have to close back on your inlet flow valve a lot such that the purigen only floating up to half or 3/4 max of the length of the chamber.. i also tie a mesh bag to the end of the outlet tubing to ensure collecting any particle that may escape the rxtr into the tank. tough to describe w/ a pic:)

Well, here i go. If it works for you guys, I guess I'll jump on the band wagon. I originally wanted to get one of Kevin's fluidized beds...but I'm kinda broke now. I've already invested $1200 in him for my new stand/bookshelf and canopy. My wife was not too supportive of that by the way. So on a budget, I used what i could find in the fish room. Seeing that the waste collector on the protien skimmer was under utilized and a five gallon water bottle could be used instead, i began the conversion.

First a standard waste collector...

remove the ping pong ball from the inside chamber, add tubing to direct water flow to the bottom, and place filter material in the PVC chamber to prevent resin from overflowing back into the main tank...(also add filter material where the ping pong ball used to be...)
995.jpg

fill with purigen and rinse

The whole contraption in the sump....returning water from the UV sterilizer enters from the top and the resulting overflow leaves past the filter material

Thats pretty nifty... have you had any blow out yet?

I was thinking about making a smalllll FB filter for using this stuff since you use such a small amount even with a large tank no reason to have a 1ft FB filter for 2" of media haha. Ill let you know if anything comes of this "thought" :)

Good thinking Niko5. How about "Dual Waste Collectors" :D
Two is better than one. well....that is one for Purigen and the other for RowaPhos. I went ahead and zip tied everything for now. Tomorrow i'll get those heavy duty plastic clamps....hehe

Those are some awfuly expensive FB Filters unless you just have them laying around ;) Does the water just come out of the overflow holes?

I picked mine up at City Pets (they just got it it wasent there a few weeks ago) Havent seen it anywhere else.

Does anyone know how much flow you should run through this? If i make a small FB Filter with 1/2" pipe.. its not so small anymore... was thinking of 1/4" tube.

Everyone said they charged $80 for a FB. This way was much cheeper for me...even the cost for them new. shhhh :thumb:

yah, the water comes out past the blue filter pad on top. that way it just drizzles down. I just happened to be there when Donny was making his order on dry goods and i asked for some of that stuff. None of the other stores seemed to care for it when i asked around.
