I decided to take all but one tank down to prepare for moving and need to make some fresh saltwater to store/cook my live rock in for awhile. I don't have any algae problems but some of that rock is more than 5 years old, from our very first reef tank, so there's quite a bit of crud/silt/detritus I'd like to clear out before setting up the 180 in the new house.

Who's got the best prices on cheap salt these days (preferably southside)? It's been a LONG time since I bought salt! Looking for something cheap since I'll be going through alot of it during the cooking/de-crapping of the rock.

Thanks! :D

Sherri,

When I cooked my live rock I used water from my tanks I took out for water changes. I dunked the rocks in the water a few times to get the loose detritus out of them and then I put powerheads in the container to help a bit more. After a week or so of that I then took all the rock out and put it in fresh mixed saltwater. This eliminated a lot of the detritus and probably saved me a bit of time and money. I have had the same rock in the same water for a while now and there is hardly any detritus on the bottom of the tubs. It seems to have worked well.
