I took out about 4-5 Asterina Starfish!! I saw one on my zoas and I was on the hunt. I did a research and some are saying a chocolate chip star will do the job. Have any one have had this problem?

A chocolate chip star will eat a lot more than asterinas, they like many zoas, mushrooms, xenia, anthelia, etc.

I did read about some of the linkia stars that were eating asterinas. They even had pics of them being eaten, I think it was on reef central. I have a few asterinas, and will be getting another linkia pretty soon.

A Harlequin will clear all of them out in a matter of days. From there, you'll just have to keep it fed every few weeks with a chocolate chip.
I've never seen Asternias do any damage myself.

That may be why my small zoas are dwindling in population, while all my large ones are growing just fine. I haven't seen them on my corals, usually just the glass and rock, but who knows what they do when I'm not watching!

I never had a problem with Asterinas you may want to check closer on the Zoas, you may have one or several nudi branch, I had the same problem a while back almost all my zoas were gone and finally caught and killed over 100 nudis.

My Harlequin Shrimp, I like asterinas but like these better and had to feed them one every day from my big tank, these were in my nano you can see that they are fighting for an Asterina:

Look for these, they are about 1/4"

I never had any problem with asterinas until recently. Kept wondering why parts of my GBN frags were turning white. After a closer look they has asterinas on them. Removed them, next day more were on them.

TN,
I had boat loads of asterina in my 90 gallon. At first I thought they were great, that is until they started eating my zoas. I ended up going the harlequin shrimp route as well. Added one and he finished of most of them in two weeks. I keep a chocolate chip star in my fuge and chop an arm off every few weeks to hand feed the harlequin.

He has since become one of my favorite species in my system. They are so colorful and have really cool personality. Always waving the arms when I come to the tank pretending to be a flowing coral. :)If you have zoa eating stars... harlequin shrimp is the only way to go in my opinion.

Kinda interesting since I'm actively trying to encourage the asterina population in my tank. But then I'm not a zoa keeper either...

good luck,
Steve

:) Steve you should have told me! I had THOUSANDS of them. That was my problem, they everything and then ran out until they decided that they liked the taste of zoas. I would have given them to you for free!!!

Funny enough I saw a couple yesterday even though the harlequin is in the tank. Guess I've been keeping it full with chocolate chip star legs.

If you want mine, I can probably collect about 30-50 of them that are visible.

I found 2 predatory astrenias in my nano recently as well. They look differant than the majority of the others that we have in our tanks, the others of which are harmless. The bad ones appeared to be sandy in color apposed to having black on there back, and they were about double the size. I plucked em and flushed em havn't seen one since ;)
