So in my infinite wisdom and thinking abilities I have come up with a what I think is a great idea. What would be wrong with running 2 separate sumps? I could get (2) 30" sumps, place them on each side and have each drain and return go in and out to its corresponding overflow.

Good bad?

Bad. Unless you connect both sumps, you're asking for a wet floor. That, or make sure either sump can handle the entire amount of water that back-flows if there's a power outage. OR use back-flow restricters, but I never recommend those to people because they can fail.

Why not just get a 55 gallon and use that?

Well overflow pipe between the 2 absolutely. And if power fails then both sumps can take water drain and hold no problem.

I was thinking about setting skimmer in one and setting the other up with miracle mud/live sand fuge.

Just brainstorming.

IMO it's possible as long the can hold as Flipside is saying your return capacity when you power goes off.
My question is WHY?
Why run two sumps if you can get the work done with one.
Two return pumps, two times the fail save is something goes wrong.
If you run a skimmer in one it might just under perform as your return drain will bring in only 50% of your tank water and skimmer is rated for twice the size your tank is.
If I would have a choice............... don't, get a a sump as large that fits under your tank and be done with it.
There is always a possibility to drill two large holes for 1.5" bulkheads to connect the two sumps as they will operate as one.

Guess I'll spend a bit more too that way. I suppose I'll make a decision between the emerald 39 and one of the tide line series they have.

I love a lot of the other sumps out here like Synergy and such, just not a fan of the lead time!

Well I'm either going to do a trigger systems Emerald 39 or their tideline 48.

+1 the above.
Sure would be awesome looking though along with being super effective. Only downfall is slightly more cost but would be cheaper than a tideline 48

Maybe 2 ruby 30s models. Put the skimmer in one and set the other up as a refugium

Horrible analogy but I pulled the trigger today lol. (2) Trigger Systems Ruby 30Sump models will be here tomorrow. Now I just need to decide what I'm going to do with the pump situation. I have an unknown size Panworld pump now but I'm thinking about trying a couple of the new simplicity pumps. When I install these sumps I'll be putting an adjoining drain pipe to cover a pump failure and I was thinking about plumbing the returns together to each pump as well.

Meaning each pump will suck from both sumps in case one fails the other is still returning water to the tank from both sumps.

If planned properly one of these is a refugium.

I gues I should have read page 2 before posting

Lol well I'm sure it's been done before but the way I see it is, if I do it this way, when/if one pump fails and I'm not there even with the crossover pipe up top I can still recirculate on both sides. One side being set up with the protein skimmer in it, the other sump will be dedicated as a refugium
