The genus Trey and myself have assembled a DIY Super LED Light pendent for my new work nano :). It consists of 134 20,000 MCD "white" LED's. I have it setup on my current work nano (doesent fit as I am redesigning my tank at the moment). So far just after one day the light is great. Its a beautiful chrisp white with hint of blue light thats very bright. All of my corals are opening even a few zoa's that I have not seen open lately with just my 10 Watt PC bulb. very good results just for one day.

So how long did it take to make, and how much did it cost?

B

We made it last night in about 6 or 7 hours - some development time on Treys side.

They are wired in parallel on some home etched boards. These were small individual boards that we made so that we could easily vary the number of LED's (14 bulbs per board). As we get a better idea of how many bulbs are needed for a specific sized tank, we can use a single board per fixture.

Can anyone here (besides me) imagine sitting across from Nick for 6-hours soldering up 134 LED's?

Just kidding. We have a good time doing it, and I think the result is even better than we had hoped for.

Later,
Trey

It will look even better when its over the right sized tank its looks kinda goofy now hanging over :p

But hey the best part of the whole thing is the chair right next to the tank. As soon as someone sits down to look at the tank you first tell them about the neat new lights then they ask to see so you pickup the hood and shine them right in their eyes haha priceless every time :) I never get tired of the screams

Did you take any pics of the business end? I'm interested to see if you sprayed anything over your wiring to prevent corrosion later

Also what is the wattage draw?

No pictures were taken during construction. To a large extent this is a test unit. For a more permanent installation we would use one of two coats of a quality conformal coating for the circuit boards.

The wattage draw is about 24 watts, but we have not asserted whether we over did it with the lights. Less may be preferred; we will see.

Trey

Yes I would love to see more detail about how you constructed you light. I have been tossing around that idea for a while to make a light for my pico

Nick,

When you have the light running for some time, can you comment on the difference in heat from your old light.

Thanks.

Very cool project, can you draw up a schematic on how the arrey is wired? together, and if you used any Resistors?
thanks
