Advice needed: somewhat noob. 6 years out of the hobby. Building a marineland 150g XH reef ready.
Starting off FOWLR and then will go inverts then LPS and ultimately maybe some SPS as the tank matures, but focus will not be SPS.
First time building a true sump. Had a HOB system before. Doing...
I have an entrenched battle to control aiptasia in my tank. I can't completely eradicate, I can only control. I use "Aiptasia Solution" to kill them.
I'd prefer a biological solution. I bought three small peppermint shrimp, drip acclimated them, put them in the tank and never saw them again...
I've got these little strips of "things" all over my tank. They come in about 1/4-1/2" "strips". They look like maybe eggs, or tiny barnacles??? They kind of appear out of nowhere. They don't seem to hurt anything and if I wipe them they are easily destroyed.
Thoughts?
Tank stats:
58 gallon (36” wide)
4-bulb T-5 fluorescent Lighting
2- 5000l/h koralia-style powerheads
30”x4”x12” hang-on-back combined protein skimmer and refugium (stocked with chaeto and ulva) fed by Rio 600 pump.
40 lbs of “dead” rocks
15 lbs of live rock
Started cycling the tank in...
Ok, so my Lawnmower blenny has been a nice green color. I come home yesterday and now he's totally tan. It's like he went from jungle green camoflauge to desert camo. Is this a problem or do they just do that?
Ok so my nitrates are somewhere in the neighborhood of 40ppm (the API test kit is incredibly hard to distinguish between 10 and 80- are there any others that are better?).
I appear to have had two fatalities recently, my royal gramma and firefish. Found only one quarter of the body of one of...
Ok, so I have an eco-system Hang-On-Back combination protein skimmer and refugium. If you're not sure what I'm talking about, visit:

Anyway, it's used and it's driven by a used Rio 600 (200GPH)...
So last weekend I bought a Lawnmower blenny and a royal gramma basslet. Up until now, all my fish have acclimated quite quickly and begin eating day 1 or 2.
My lawnmower blenny hides constantly and doesn't come out for feeding times. I'll see him hiding in between rocks and looking at me, but...

so I bought a frag of my favorite favia (there's a pun there somewhere) from Dennis yesterday and have it sitting on the sand bed right now.
Does Favia grow its own "rock" or "base" underneath itself, or does it need a rock to grow over? Should I glue it to a rock, or will it grow on the sand bed?
Ok, so I'll keep the blog only for friends and family and post everything for y'all here.
Quick status update: I'm putting together my first ever marine aquarium. Stats:
58 Gallon - 36"x17"x20" High
4 bulb 36" long T-5 fluorescent lighting
2 Koralia-style 1300 GPH powerheads
Hang-on-back 30"...
