So I am setting up my old Oceanic 120 and just threw the rocks in, almost literally. I pulled them out of a tub, submersed them and dropped them letting them land how and where they wanted. There is eggcrate under the sand so rock vs. glass wasn't a concern. I just did it that way because the rocks were in storage for over a year and I just wanted them in the water to start cleaning them, not worried about what it looked like. Each day as I walk passed them I think, ''Hmm, that could work..''

Opinions? Feel free to be brutal, I'm not attached to it this way.

You are pretty creative so I'm sure it's going to look good once you are done with it.

In my opinion, take most of the rock out and just keep few pieces.

i'm also in the minimalistic camp. Sometimes less is more. depends on what kinda tank you want.

minimalistic...

That's what I was planning from the beginning, like 4 or 5 large pieces and several medium to small ones to accent. Make a pillar with an overhang creating a large shadow near the middle or something like that. I just wasn't sure which pieces I would use so I tossed about half my rock in to try to get a good look at them in the water. I will probably still go that route.

Anyone else?

I think it would work. I'm far from a minimalist. I like tanks with lots of rocks and coral.

Bottom line, if you like it go with it. Everyone has an opinion but the best thing about this hobby it that there is no one right way to do it.

only reason i would say to take some out is if you were going to make it an sps tank, you need room for growth. therwise keep it if you like it.

I like the Art Deco look better than the natural reef, I'm trying to thin mine out more. But with a 72bow w/ overflow, there isn't a lot of footprint to work with. I have already removed over 50lbs.

now just wait for someone to chime in and say it does not look like a natural reef.

neither do actinics or fluorescent lighting... but we use them anyhow

Im not cultured enough to know what Art Deco means... But I know what the word minimal means and I know what I like :D

Its very open with tons of places to put my little frags with lots of room to watch them grow. I like this minimal look but came from the school of rock walls and 2-3lbs/gallon so any input or suggestions would be helpful.

Outstanding! Now to fill it with water... Probably ready for salt on Tuesday.
