I bought 2 pearly jaw fish after a long wait to find some. They both looked great took them home and after careful aclaimation put them in t my tank. 1 of them headed for the rocks and I never saw him again untill I found him dead the next day. The other one stayed in the corner of the tank and did not look to stressed. I watched him for the rest of the afternoon (about 2-3 hours) and did'nt see any other fish bothering him at all (I have a coral beauty, some green chromis a 6 lined wrasse and a LW blenny and 2 brown brittle stars). Both were dead the next morning - my tank has amm,no3,no2=0 ph- 8.2 100 lbs LR all corals look great so, are the jaw fish hard to keep ? Maybe just too stressed ? Or is something maybe messing with them? any Ideas -I sure want to have one in my tank

Those are hard to keep in pairs because you never know if they are mated pairs. Otherwise they will kill each other. However in your case I dont have the slightest idea waht could have happened. I have had any luck with jawfish either. Unlike someone on here who has gotten two to spwan. :p

Are you sure they're dead? I mean did you see actual bodies to confirm? I take it for granted from what you said that you're sure. One of our jawfish hid for TWO MONTHS, and we assumed it was dead, when one day, out of the blue, he showed up. Just thought I'd ask.

Jawfish are communal fish in the wild, but if they don't have enough room, and they are both male, they will likely bicker. But for both of them to die, that seems strange if all your parameters are good and no other fish are bothering them. The only thing that leaps to mind are the brittle starfish. They might freak the jawfish out or even try to eat them if they're not established in their burrows yet.

Other than that..............I dunno.

well, 1 of the jaw fish was dead on the bottom with no blemishes on him but the other had been eaten on by the brittle star but I figured it probably was already dead when the star fish got to it , but maybe not? I might try 1 more jaw fish but if that one does not wrk out I think I will stop there. Well, this was my first try so I might have just been unlucky.
Just thought i would get some input and see if there was something else I should know or was doing wrong.
Thanks

I have 4 of them and they all get along fine for the most part. Sometimes they bicker but they seperate and everything is fine again. With those guys I think it is better to add them to the tank first and let them get established because they get freaked out easily by other larger/aggressive fish.

Add them with the lights off next time and wait until the next day to turn them on. They'll work all night on a new hole.

ROFL.. I got mine a week ago.. First, he was skiing on top of the water.. NExt thing i know, he is making a hole.. Then, a few days later, his hole was taken over by the engineer goby, so he has made another... Fast little fish.. Had i known he was gonna hide all day, I may not have gotten him...

We got our jawfish from BB's, too. They only had three at the time, so we took what they had. It was obviously a good purchase :D

look for a long wall, with a hole in it.. Then you have found it... I think Its 1960 and PERRY.. Paintball shop, and some trading card place next to it.. Across from Mcdonalds...
