My question is about half of my acans look like they are dying. The centers of them are turning white. I dont know what could be the cause of this I have never seen the center go white. I have seen the sides die out but they always re-grow. I tested the water and here are my params

SG 1.023
pH 8.2
Ca 400
kH 10.0
Mg 1100
NH3 0
NO2 0
NO3 0-5
PO4 .5

I am getting GFO reactor to help with the phosphates. New fish additions are yellow tang, lyrtail anthias, Bi-color angel. My first guess is maybe the angel but I have had them before with no problems and I havent seen him nip at the acans. All of my other corals are fine like my hammers, frogspawn, bubble coral, blastos, chalice, and zoas. Any ideas?

First guess is its a problem with your magnesium. I'd try to keep it around 1300-1350, definitely no lower than 1250. Raising your SG may help too, 1.025-1.026 are better levels for coral/inverts. Also you may have low iodine, though that's just a guess. Have you dipped them in flatworm exit or lugol's to see if there may be hitchhikers on them? Its always annoying to troubleshoot when only a few corals are doing bad and the rest look fine!

I haven't dipped them and my params have been pretty constant so that is why I was assuming the angel. But I can always dose more Mg. I have had the corals for about a year and this just started happening about a week ago and slowly getting worse.

Ok so its official its the angel. I saw him this morning going at one of my acans. Man they were awesome acans all gone now, no way I can get him out of the tank.

I learned none of the angel is reef safe. I was going to get one.

I have had good luck with them before. But I guess it takes only one to spoil it. No more angels in my reef tank when this one dies.

Many people have... you cant even trust Dori any more... thats annoying. There are 4 reef safe angles out there. I want 2 of the watanabei so bad but I dont think I have enough room for them. I will have to see when I finally have water in my 65 gallon.

Sorry to hear, I have a ton of acans and blastos and that is why I won't get a flame angel, which is one of my favorite fish. I am trying to get a bellus though which will be a nice addition. You might try a fish trap or something similar to get him out. I went through this with a blenny which just ravaged all my lps, ate nothing else. Finally snuck up on him with a net.

Sorry about your bad luck with the angel. I've tried angels twice; a bicolor and a flame. Both times they hammered lps and sps corals. The worst part was not loosing the coral it was having to remove all the rock to get the angels out. Total PITA
