I just got a new acan (thanks soymilk), never had one before so this might be a silly question. Does it need a rock to grow onto or will it form its own "base" and I can leave it on the sandbed?

It'll grow its own base. I have all mines in the sand. Makes it easier to move around. They grow really fast.

Have you tried feeding it yet?

I've read, IIRC, the main thing is to place them on a flat surface if you want them to stay in the standard flat plate formation. I keep mine in the sand as well, otherwise my light bleaches them.
