Well this is interesting. Our Petco sumps use two large bags of activated carbon in all of our saltwater biowheel systems. Ours are pretty thoroughly rinsed before use to get all the powder out but they make such little note about it in the Procedure manual.

I am still under the impression that its the dust. I have been using carbon for 10 yrs, I always thoroughly rinse it and have never ever ever ever had HLLE.

That's what the article speculates. The dust is what causes it.

This is good to know. Just purchased 2 TLF reactors for gfo and carbon. I'll have to make sure to rinse the carbon really well and try to se up a filter for the output to be cautious.

What do you think can trap carbon dust?

If the dust particulate from the carbon poses a problem, I'd be inclined to say that the dust from GFO could do the same.

I wonder if the "dust" continues to pull away from the carbon or if its just from not rinsing it well enough. They dont say how the study was performed so we dont know if they rinsed it really well or if they just put it in the filter.

Does anyone know how they conducted the experiments?

Is anyone going to stop using carbon because of these findings? I also use Rox 0.8 and it's going to be pretty hard to give it up. It's amazing how clear my water is after I clean my reactor and put fresh carbon in.

I've used Purigen in the past with good results. I don't think it "polishes" the water as much, but as a "carbon-like" sponge, it's fantastic. That may be the first time I've ever typed the word fantastic. Not in my normal verbage.

How common is the disease? Not that common in my opinion to make me stop using carbon; never had any issues for the last 15 years.

LINK:"It is still unclear why HLLE does not develop in some aquarists' systems with GAC usage."

I think more research needs to be done based on the statement above.
