I get home tonight and check on my tank to discover that my S. Gigantea has swallowed my spiny urchin! This can't be good!

Suggestions anyone? Let it run its course? Remove the nem from the tank?

It's the darnedest thing. For reference, the nem is about 10" across in this pic. The urchin he ate...whole...is about 2.5" in diameter at the body. All you can see are some his spines sticking out of the nems mouth.

Really don't want to lose this anemone. It's my favorite piece and my clown would be lost without his home.

Yicks! I have read that if the food is to big often they will spit it out, but geeze I dont know how this is gonna work out. Good luck with the nem!

So a bit of research on RC reveals a couple other geniuses that housed urchins with carpets. The posts I could find reported that either the nem digested the urchin and spit out the spines, or just spit the whole thing back out. Keep your fingers crossed for me please.

Will do. I wouldnt worry to much to be honest. This sort of thing must happen in the wild, and God accounts for these things. I hope the nem comes to its senses and spits it out... maybe it just depends on how hungry it is. :D

I'm sorry to hear it... but that is pretty crazy!!!

My money says the nem survives. I think the urchin has had it though.

If it swallowed it, it'll be fine. He may spit it back out, but the nem will be ok. Like Llama said though...your urchin? Not so much.

You got to feed the hungry anemone more often. :)

@john - Clearly! I guess a silverside every third day just isn't cutting it.

Good news. After spitting out the spines and digesting the fleshy parts, my hungry nem has regurgitated the empty urchin shell. Anyone want some decoration for their tank :)

On a positive note. I think I figured out what happened to one of my solon fairys. :-(

No more urchins in that tank. :) Glad one of the two made it.
