Okay, I want to know in the long run if it's cheaper to buy a chiller than keeping the air conditioner at 74. I'm not sure how to go about figuring it out so I thought I would ask some of you mathematically minded folks. We just got our bill and it's $450! Our house is all electric (no gas) and last month we used approximately 48500 kw.

We already have the fan thing going, two in the canopy blowing on the hallides, one blowing on the sump and then a big one ocillating back and forth on the tank.

Karen,

We keep the house at approximately 75-78 degrees throughout the day and I am using 4 4" fans in my canopy. 2 fans blow in and 2 fans blow out. My tanks stays around 82 degrees all day. have 2 250 watt metal halides and 4 48" VHO bulbs on the tank. Tank is 75 gallons with a 55 gallon tank as a sump (holds approximately 35 gallons water). What lights are you running right now and what is your temp staying at?

What a wussy fan setup. I currently have 10 4" fans blowing into my tank w/ 2 open 4" diameter holes on the side of my canopy for the outblow.

We have 2 400w metal halide pendants along with 3 160w VHOs in the canopy. The canopy is more a skirt. The temp in the tank right now is running between 80-82. Right now the airconditioner is pretty much running 24/7 because it can't cool the living room where we have the tank.

BTW we have a 135g with a 40g sump/fuge.

Boosted,

What size tank and light setup are you running where you need 10 fans to cool it. The evaporation on that setup would be ungodly. With my 4 fans I evaporate about 2 gallons a day. And my wussy setup keeps my tank at a good temp.

it's a 180 gallon 6x2x2 Oceanic RR aquarium w/ a custom enclosed canopy w/ 3 250w Halides and 2 5' 96w VHO's. We used to have 4 blowing in and vents out the back, but we've added 8 fans on the back w/ 2 on the side and left on side free of fans that's directed towards our A/C intake in the house. Tank temps dropped a whole degree from the setup, and haven't really noticed much more evap than normal.

Boosted,

sounds like a nice setup. If you have any pictures I would love to see them. I also have a custom stand and canopy that I built. The canopy is enclosed and the bulbs sit approximately 6-10 inches off the water...don't remember :) I built the canopy with two holes in the top for bulb wires, 2 holes in the back for powerhead cords, solid sides, and a hinging front door. I mounted the fans on the back panel with one on each side blowing in and one on each side blowing out. My fans come on with the VHO's and run until they go off. I run the VHO's for 10 hrs and the MH's for 8 hours. I tested initially when I set the tank setup without the fans and my tank temp rose to over 85 degrees. With the fans running how I have them now it is steady at 82. I am overall very happy with the setup. Having an ro/di at home really helps though :)

I keep my a/c at about 75. My 135g has 1300w of MH (800w 10k and 500w 20k) plus 110 actinic 4x36w 6500k. My chiller comes on twice a day in the afternoon. I have to keep a heater on in the evening to keep my tank up to 78. My hood I custom built myself. It is 12" off the water, 12" high making my lights about 19" off the water. I have 2 4" fans in the hood--one out/ one in. How about them apples?

Yes, but that's alot of light and you should see how everything looks. Plus the way I have the hood suspended, I can lower it with ease. and I'm working on an electirc raising device. I guess after I get this rigged-up, I can do dust to dawn just by raising and lowering the hood. LOL!

I could see it with an electric winch mounted to the canopy hooked up to a timer to raise and lower...or some nice actuators (sp)

Well Karen, you know about our AC problems - we have bills like yours just keeping it on 78, which is why we are going to bite the bullet and have both our AC systems replaced next week. :( Anyway, according to HL&P/Reliant/Centerpoint - whatever their name is this week - for every 1 degree you lower your thermostat below 78 it increases your cooling costs 9%.

You say your AC is running constantly - I don't know how big your system is, but I know our 6 ton system (2 units) pulls around 35-40 amps when it's running. If your AC is running several hours extra per day to keep it at 74 for your fish tank, that's a lot of waste. OTOH, my 1/4 HP chiller draws 5.6 amps and runs a total of MAYBE 2 hours a day. To put that in perspective - running my chiller 2 hours a day uses as much energy as running my AC for 15 minutes. There's no comparison. Buy the chiller and raise your thermostat to 76-78 and the chiller will pay for itself in a year or two.

Another reason I like having a chiller - insurance. AC systems have a nasty habit of failing, usually in the hottest part of the summer. Last summer, ours went out twice, and each time it was out for 3-4 days (lousy home warranty company - but that's another rant :-x ). The temperature inside the house was in the low 90's when our AC was out - if I had my tank setup back then, it would have been toast without a chiller.

Thanks, Mike, for your perspective.

We will now be accepting all chiller donations :D

I'll donate to your chiller fund if you donate to my new AC fund.

Our AC unit should be in good shape. We had the outside unit replaced 3 years ago and all the attic stuff replaced last year, but you never know.

Sounds like it's time to start saving for that 1/2hp chiller.

I say it's running 24/7, but I don't know that for sure. I assume because it's never reaching the temp it's set on it just continues.

Does it have a digital thermostat? Mine will tell me how long the a/c has ran that day. You could set it for different temps and see how much longer it runs for the day.
