Hey guys,

Red-Ear-Slider-Encased-in-Acrylic.jpg

I went to San Antonio over the weekend, and while there I found these disgusting displays and jewelry (http://blog.aquanerd.com/2011/06/animals-killed-and-encased-in-plastic-jewelry.html). There are tons of exotic insects, starfish, crabs, shells, and even baby turtles encased in acrylic tombs. I've sent an email to as many companies as I could, but no responses as of yet. I want to know how these animals are killed and how many are taken from the wild. Some of the sites said they farm some of the animals used in the jewelry, but I'm curious as to what percent are actually farmed.

Just thought it was a disgusting story to share.

sweet. maybe i can drill the top and add an eyelet, wear it like a pendant. add a clock and call it turtle time.

Seriously, i wonder if the 'morbidity' factor steers people away. im not sure if i would ever 'gift' someoene a turtle frozen in acrylic.

Could you imagine living just to be killed and encased in plastic forever? That is just sad.

If you want, send me some of the e-mail addresses to those companies. I wouldn't mind e-mailing them myself.

I was just about to post a comment on the blog. It really was depressing to see that red ear slider in there. Thats horrible....

There's that other company that sells "dead corals". It looks like they rip out live corals and sun bleach them to resell. They also had dead seahorses n other junk. The really depressing thing is..... People actually buy this junk.

Kind of like living only to be torn from your home, shipped thousands of miles, and dumped in a glass box.

I only hope that they killed them before putting them in the acryllc. A long time ago I saw an article talking about them doing this to live Tarantula's. They did it live because if they were dead the hairs come off and it doesn't look right. Freakin' disgusting if you ask me.

Kind of, except for all of the free food and the dying part.

What percentage of fish and coral do you really think survive to live a long, lasting life in captivity? I don't have statistics, but I'd bet money on it being extremely low.
That being said, I don't care. I like having fish and coral in my living room. Some people might like to have a tarantula on their desk. So be it.

Where in SA specifically? I have lived there and cant remember coming across a big market for this stuff. Though there is a store on the way that does sell small insects and scorpions.

I don't have much room to complain. I'm a carnivore.

Me too! If the Hari Krishna's are right, I will have a huge herd of cattle and chickens following me around in the afterlife.

But if I have anything to do with it the animals will be put down in an ethical manner. I won't buy or consume veal, I buy free range chickens and eggs....etc. But I eat a lot of animals for sure.

I agree, put them down in an ethical manner.

Eating animals for survival is one thing, but putting them in a piece of jewelry is another. The purpose of killing for food is meaningful, whereas the other is not. The jewelry isn't necessary and the insect, turtle, or whatever is dead only to appeal to a small market of people will will most likely lose interest in the trinket after only a handful of days.

The store/kiosk these were located at was inside the Rivercenter mall. And there was actually another kiosk at a different part of the same mall.

they said that some of the animals were farmed. and judging by the sheer volume, they are probably not animals that died by chance.

Is it not the same as a fur coat or leather jacket? You don't have to wear fox or mink to stay warm. I've seen some real nice lookin' alligator boots. There is a green line somewhere...the question is, where do you draw it.

I personally hunt and fish for the meat, and not the trophy. Meat is not necessary for survival, especially the amount we consume. Many top athletes are vegetarians.

i agree...fur coats aren't a necessity. that's why i don't own any fur. leather on the other hand is a lot less avoidable, but i see your point. at least with the leather, the cows are probably already being slaughtered for food so why not take advantage of the rest of the animal and not let it go to waste.

i'm assuming that's how the leather industry works, but i really have no clue.
