I was wondering if people are still getting algea blooms from oceanic salt. Ever since I started using it I get a greenish film on my sand bed. It always is the worst around the time I do a Water change. I am trying to get rid of the bucket but I think it will just get thrown away. What is a good salt to use? I used kent before but heard good things about oceanic. (that is why I switched)

I'll let you know tomorrow, as I'm going to do a water change on two tanks tonight. The only thing I've discovered is that it is very low in alkalinity. I'm having to boost it with baking soda.

i used to have a brown algea layer on the botttom of the sand bed when I started using Oceanic.. but from the time I started using Seachem Purigen 2 months ago, my tk water looks clear and the brown algea problem is gone now. I love that purigen stuff now.. it works much better than carbon. you can see your water look much clearer after a day or two.

Quoc,
Thanks for posting such a rave review of that product two days after I placed an order for dry goods! :(

Incidentally, you mentioned Premium Aquatics as the place where you order your dry goods. Have you ever tried www.thatpetplace.com? They had the Tropic Marin Bio-Magnesium powder and Aragamight powder that Mandoman recommended I get...all the other online places didn't carry one or the other. Thatpetplace has great prices, less than PA and Marine Depot. They also carry Purigen...8.5 oz for $10.99.

Sorry to derail your thread, Chad. :)

I've been using Oceanic in all my tanks for months without a problem. I will say its low in Alk. Other than that, I really like it.

There are a couple of threads on RC about Oceanis salt causing hair algae and film on sand. Most people never knew and blamed it on something else until someone mentioned Oceanic salt. Then they put 2 & 2 together and it was the same time they started using Oceanic.

By the way, I have seen Purigen at a couple LFS's. The good thing is that you can recharge Purigen for about 5 times. And the instructions are on the website. It does make the water crystal clear and have seen it both in Mandomans tank and Quoc's.

Sherri,
yeah, I checked thatpetplace before. But PA will match price if they have the product... so i usually do a comparision in prices at diff store and then ask PA to match. I tried to buy most of my stuffs from them to build up my credits so they'll give me good discounts in future buying. And they always did. In fact, in my latest order w/ them yesterday- i didn't ask them match any prices, they ended up giving me discounts that is way lower than any other stores :D For example, i got that purigen for only $8.02, the Tropic Marine bio calc 4lb for $22 and ESV kalkwasser 4lb for only $16 - these are best prices online!
