why is my aquarium salt a whole solid block its hardened for some reason

It sounds like moisture got in it. The container it's in needs to be pretty well sealed, especially in Houston in the summer. You can probably still use it if you can break it up, but it likely won't dissolve as well as usual and may leave the water a bit cloudy.
Yeah +1 to moisture. Keep it in a Tupperware or some kind of airtight container. Gel silica packets (like in beef jerky bags) may also help stave off the moisture that causes the clumping and hardening.
