Someone mentioned that i dont drop in on marshreef too often. guilty.

im on dial up (stop the laughter) and its a pain with the new website to log in from home.

Some of you may know that I now live in the Marshall Islands, but have my roots in Houston.

Thought i'd share some tank shots. everything shown has been personally collected by me....including the fish and corals.

I've had a ton of fun learning new things out here about oceana and all things reef.

Enjoy.

Chuck

Same here, bro!

A lot of us miss you around these parts... Mainly your knack for destroying tension, and k.i.s.s mentality...

Any way, super stoked that things have panned out better than you planned. Be safe brewja!

Brian,

Im actually giving it some thought, collecting on the side. The guy who taught me to “wrangle” fish is leaving the island moving to Hawaii so im the only one in this atoll that collects. Thiers other guys in Majuro that collect. I wont be able to catch half of what he can, but I can get the basics. Also talking with some locals about aqua culture opportunities. I can sort and pick corals that I think would propagate well and have someone Marshallese manage it.

The government is the hurdle point, but could get something going if we can convince them of the economic benefits. Im not too motivated by money….that’s the big problem in getting me off my duff.

Yes, I’m lucky. I on the live lagoon side. Some people live ocean side. I bet the roar of the ocean day in day out would drive me crazy. It’s nice and calm on the lagoon side, jump in any time.

<---------------- Jealous.............

pluses and minuses…..I don’t own a car or a cell phone and I ride a bike to work every morning.

Nice to see you back :) Been following your thread on RC, just totally awesome!

Thanks. Wasn’t sure how many folks look at it. Its been fun keeping up with it, even though a PITA with dial up.

Yeah its a really nice thread! I follow it as well.

Thanks Steve. Ditto above comment.

Flipster AKA Leo da man. It’s comfortably numb chilling out here.

Some day, ill have to wear pants and shoes to work. Until then…. hope all is well with you.

I think your being nice with your wording. I know im a wanker who can be rude and crude at times, but always in good humor.

Man your tank is sick. love the fish. the corals are ridiculous.

Thanks. It’s in a constant state of morph, changes weekly sometimes.

A few more new shots. I wish I had the photography talent of Dennis or Felix….still working on it so please bear with me. I plan on going out collecting this weekend for fish, should be a fun one.

That is awesome. Thank you so much for the post and pictures! Your tank is amazing!

I suggest asking your dive buddy collector before he goes to Hawaii, what is the process to collect for payment? Who does he supply to and who do they sell to in the United States.

Once we narrow it down to the collection station that ships to the US, we will be sure to get your catch in Houston.

I will look and see what collection stations are close to you and see what info I can get from them.

Look into flights that hop your island or start boozing it up with pilots. You will find many owner operator pilots will let you take a "hop" for some fuel money. Being a military base do you ever get a chance to take military hops, they are free for authorized personnel? Since you have a clearance, their may be opportunities for you to accompany transport items to their destination?

Cheers
Brian

Hey that is awesome that you picked all that yourself down there. How big it your tank and do you use the water fresh right out of the ocean? I wanna look up where marshal island is at.

Awesome shots C.

You still catch your own fish? :)

Yep. Got really lucky and hooked up with a guy named Brian Greene, formerly of Twilight Aquatics. He’s one of the premiere collectors in the world, been out with Richard Pyle to collect on scientific expeditions….not just aquarium stuff. Real marine biologist type. He showed me the ins and outs on collecting. Really don’t have a choice out here but to go and get your own stuff, live aquaria doesnt ship here :.

Thanks. I always say pluses and minuses. The weekends make it worth it put here.

Love those midget chromis

me too! I think I have six of them now. They’re tricky to catch. You have to catch them hanging out in corals that don’t have somewhere to dart into. Its like a magic show when you break out the nets, chromis tend to disappear!

MAn love that Leopard you got. You catch that? When you coming back Chuckie?

yes. They’re pretty easy to catch. Some fish just dart into a hole, wait you out. Leopard wrasses want to keep moving, so you can keep after them and eventually net them.

Brian,

Found the weak link in getting fish off this atoll. The ONE guy who has the license on Ebeye (next island over) is totally not reliable.

All fish need to be cleared thru the RMI government. He’s somehow connected, family wise in the Marshall islands. And has the racket going.

Local politics are weird around here.

im a civilian contractor, dont get free hops. gotta pay for airfare. of course we have direct dod civilians out here...

Hey that is awesome that you picked all that yourself down there. How big it your tank and do you use the water fresh right out of the ocean? I wanna look up where marshal island is at.

no, I mix my own ASW. NSW is very inconsistent from day to day, and it rains a lot here. I wont collect seawater after it rains, too much freshwater runoff.

Its hard to time the weather, easier to mix it up.

Heres my tank rundown

58G Oceanic Illuminata rimless, Mazarra LED x 3, Tunze 6095 x 2, Eheim 1260, BM-180 skimmer, TLF reactors, Apex LT

quickie update, tons of anthias in the waters now. Beautiful schooling fish. I managed one bartlett anthias on my last outing. Broke one of my nets collecting deep, stuck collecting in 20-30 feet of water. its uper hard to collect with only one net. Im going to go back for a couple more bartletts, thin out some of my other fish in the tank.

Shooting for 4 rhomboidalis in the tank ….i have 2 now. Love em.
