I'll hopefully be getting in my liver rock tonight and could really use some ideas an how to do the aquascaping. I have a 6' long tank and would like to have 2 bommies I think but I'd like to see what other people have done.

Would y'all mind posting a photo of your tank showing the aquascape?

For those who have a really vertical structure - how did you achieve it? I already have 20# of base rock in decent sizes and I'm getting 2x 50# boxes of rock and should have a few big pieces. What I'd like to avoid is the "stack or small rocks from front to back - with corals on it like a fruit-stand" look.

Thanks!

James,

Here's mine, need an updated image.
The tank is 6' long and 36" front to back.

You can't tell but the left hand 'mound' is using two giant pieces of man-made rock that I bought, really helped the shape without making it just a 'pile'. And the right hand 'mound' is a large piece of coral skeleton that helped the shape considerably as well.

Here's the 46 bow before I swapped it over to the 90 this past weekend. Not a vertical structure, but no fruit stand either. I just wanted to post it anyway. :)

These pictures are not mine, but I love the minimalist look with little rock, and lots of room for corals to grow out.

If you want tall, slender structures, a good way to do it is by drilling holes through the center and stacking them on an acrylic rod. Reef-safe epoxy can also be used to make some really neat formations.

That last tank is the background image on my computer desktop and pretty much the inspiration for my aquascaping.

:p

Thanks y'all. I have dove on dozens of reefs in Indonesia and the Philippines so have a good idea of what a bommie looks like - just not how to make a good one on a small scale in my tank. This has helped a lot.

Please keep those photos and suggestions coming. For those who have drilled your rock - do you just use a concrete or tile bit?

Cheers

You will want to use a diamond hole saw, plenty available on ebay, and I'm sure there are quite a few floating around here that you could use. I have one for 1" bulkheads that you can use.

yeah I am about to set up a new reef and am pretty lost as well I like the idea of the minimalist look but know the rock really helps the tank have you decided on your sand bed? BB, deep, or light? I am very interested in seeing what you come up with.

Well, my rock came in this morning (nothing like a drive to Hobby at 1am to pick up rock) and there are some REALLY big pieces. It's a great open structure which looks like old colonies of Heliopora and Pocillipora which have cemented and grown into LR.

Thanks for the offer Chris, but I am not sure that I will need to drill anything and I doubt this stuff would hold together if I did :) Hopefully once things have cleared up a bit tonight (skimmer is going nutz) I can do some aquascaping.

The rock supposedly comes from Alor and got here via air freight. There was no newspaper in the box to tell me the date, but there were some LIVE anemones in the bottom of the box (in the Q tank now) and they popped right back to life - so I doubt the rock has been out of water long.

It looks like I will be able to do a nice big bommie on the left and a decent sized one on the right side of the tank w/ a canyon in between.

Cheers

I just realized I read your post completely wrong! lol, I could have swore you were asking about drilling your tank, which is why I suggested the diamond hole saw. For ROCK, the larger drill bits for hammer drills work great, I have some of those too if you change your mind :)

Sounds like you got some really nice/ fresh rock! Cant wait to see how it comes out.

Here's my preliminary Aquascape - I'll finalize once I get all my plumbing parts order:

The bommie on the left will change a bit once my loc-line and eductors get here. I got a SCWD for 10 bux and I may or may not keep it - it seems like a good use of the closed loop. Obviously the LR rubble pile on the right will move too :)

Cheers
