Hi all

I came across this company on Ebay - Auraled and was wondering if anyone has heard anything about them or tried them.

Looks intriguing. I want to improve lighting in my 29 Biocube and don't really have the time (or money ) for DYI or hood modifications.

I am considering these LEDs but wanted to see if anyone had any experience with them :?

I don't know anything about them but you might try contacting Robert "RGH69" he is working w/someone on a biocube retro kit that I think is a drop in replacement.

+1. And he's a pretty good guy.

That said, there is a thread on RC about the Auraled stuff.

ill be getting my AURALED's this weekend and will be fitting them in. I will update this thread with how things will be coming along. Also kyleH has them on his 8G and you might want to talk with him as well and see his thoughts on this item.

auraled

Hey guys, I just saw this thread.

I have chatted with Rob\auraled on ebay on a few things. Good guy, but seems really busy. Response to me like 1x/week. Probably explain why it took so long to my setup going. So far I got a 10 light unit for my 8gal biocube. I had it customize with 6 white lights clusters and 4 blue.

For +$5. in ebay, he shipps fedex that got to me in 3-5 days. Great deal considering ebay stores seems to like charging $10-20. for shipping and "handling". When you get the item, there is isually a $2. stamp from USPS.

Each light module sticks in the hood with simple doublesided strong foam tape, and everything looks good. I messed up my placement and will need to knife it off. But, I can live with my layout mistakes (tip, use some scotch tape to do a dry test run, when you use the foam tape, it is more-or-less a *one* shot deal.). My hood still powers the fan even when no bulbs are plugged in, so I have it on a power strip with a single timer. The led's don't make any more heat than the stock lights, so everything seems to be running well.

I have been running for 3 weeks, and my xenias seem to like them more than the stock 50/50. They stopped pulsing a few months back, and now they seem to start twitching this week when I moved them directly under the white led. The light doesn't cast a large "glow" like PC do, but I think the light is stronger. My LPS seems to be doing fine without any relocation. And I have 2 birdnests and a monti cap that seems okay right now (at the 3 week mark). But, these easy sps came from super healthy and well fed (food and light), so it may be another month before I see any ill effects of my setup.

I think the led are only 0.5w white led's, but each white modulce has a cluster 4 of them in a single unit--blue is only 1. I think it is good enough for a nano tank. corals on the bottom of a 28g cube may not do well and need to be placed a little higher. But I think anything placed half way will do better than the stock PC.

I was over at flexrac to see his led setup. Definately no comparison of auraled and the high-end led systems--flexrac can possibly burn my corals 3-5x over compared to the auraled. But I also didn't pay more than $85. shipped.

Burns warm and not hot, last for 5 years, guarantee for 2 years. The savings of not having to replace bulbs in 5 years pays for itself a few times over. The added savings in lower electricty to power or cool the area will add to the "no-brainer" thinking of to-buy-or-not-to-buy.

If my corals survive another 1 month, I will place another order for my 28g nano cube. I am thinking of getting a combined 20 modules or maybe ask for a custom setup for 24 units for a little more light.

(I just received a custom order for my buddy Khan_man. He has a custom 12 unit set up with 4 blues and 8 whites (I think). I think he will set them up this weekend in his 12g nano. )

before and after pictures.

Oh, I just found this on my computer. Attached are some pics.

I happened to have had pictures of some blastos that "pops" with blue lighting that I took before my light additions.

Note that I requested 4 blues to 6 whites. I little deeper blue lighting that gives makes my tank a purple hue. Well, I thnk it is more purple because of the coraline I have. Anyway, attached are pictures of 2 blastos that you can see the bluer effect. I think my tank looks better. But it is not quite white, not quite blue actinic, not quite T5, but unique.

(note, my camera tends to be more reddish with the 50/50; and it seems to take 20% darker picture with the led. I really like the pics of the blue, but it is brighter than that in person.)

Have you noticed a reduction in the tanks temperature?

temperature...

I am a bad reef keeper. I never paid attention to my tank's temperature.

But, I have put my hands around the fans to feel how hot the PC get. And, the LED's are noticeably cooler. It is still slightly warm, but not blowing a steady stream of hotter air like the PC's were.

Hey kyle if you can be kind enough to post pics of your set up that would really be appreciated. Would like to see how things look with the clear cover over them VS how ROB/auraled had them with out the clear plastic piece.

I still have the plastic cover.

I still have the clear cover. I didn't want any of the moisture or saltwater from getting into the hood. My hood still functions.

I probably can get stronger lights if I removed it, but I think I am fine.

auraled has a few link on his auction on ebay.

if you look at auraled's on ebay there are several examples of tanks that he has modified for his friend that runs a petstore. The 28g biocube may be of interest to you. His earlier posting stated that he only used 10 blues + 10 whites running for about 3 months. Now, that 28g has red led lights added in the updated pictures.

My 8 gal is running well for 6 weeks now. I think 2 baby frags of xenia (placed about 2" from the top surface) seems a little sun burn, so I will move them lower. Everything else is not doing any worse than the previous stock PC lighting.

My 2 birdnest and Monti caps are doing well. (No crazy growth or anything, but it looks like growth).

On ebay, here's an active link (http://cgi.ebay.com/Auraled-LED-Aqu...t=LH_DefaultDomain_0&var=&hash=item80105fd66f). The guys has other auctions, but the one with blue had pretty good pics of combinations.

His prices are a little inbalanced, $50 for 5, $70 + $8ship for 10, and $100 for 15 whites. The 15 whites are new since I bought from him, and I may consider getting 15 whites + 10 blues for $170-178. for my 28g nano in the next 1-2 months.

He has a set of 10 blues on a dimmer for $100. I bet he can put a dimmer on whites too for about the same. With a dimmer, you can create the balanced colors to get that perfect look with 12k white and 460nm blue combination.

thanks for reminding me about the lights ..i had forgot and ordered the stunner strips ...bummer ..that bites ..lol ..maybe i can return them ..but not sure of that ..i have 2 biocubes and 8 and a 29gal...im glad to hear that you left your clear cover on ...i think that is what i would like to do ..because i wouldnt want the original lighting to ruin...to get your fans to run on your biocube did you have to leave the ballast plugged in ..i wonder if you can run the lights with both the pc and led ...or would that be a good idea or a bad idea ...thanks

it may be a good idea...

I like the PC sometimes becuase it offers a balanced glow for the light. The LED's offer a colder lighting, so it gives a different look.

my 10 units of auraled's was a bit cluttered in my biocube 8, and I think I had a tight fit. I will try to post a picture of the hood in a bit. If you want to try use 1 of the existing if you may have real-estate to try to put it all in. And then, you may want to find a way to prevent the wire from touching PC bulb--they can get hot, and some cause unwanted heat distribution.

However, I like your idea if you can get it to work. I also have 2 brand new single bulb 50/50 (10k/blue actinic) that I can sell to anyone for $15/each (or $25 for both)--after all, what am I going to do with them.

I Like the colors very much. It gives my corals more pop also gives my fish pop. After installing and running or 3 hours all my corals were open and happy. I have also let a Rbta loose in there yday. Yes I took the plunge. I had to gives my clowns a home. I am liking the auraleds so far. The color like KyleH said is alot cooler looking and compared to my pc it looks "less" power full. But I was told that these are more 12k and not 10k. So I just put them in. I'll show you guys pics of pc and auraleds and you guys can compare. As for the cheat light it's working great another member directed me to buy it instead of jbj glo led light which was $60 I got this one for $15 shipped to home. Just pm me and I'll send the link to get the light.

Oh by the way I had him make a custome strip for me. I got 8 white and 4 blue. The only thing with custome is you don't get the same wire space/distance. So if I were to do It again I would just get his original package that he has. Or tell him to spread the wire evenly. Which seems to much to ask. But a 10 pack of white and 5 pack of blue I think would be ideal. Either way illl have some pics for you guys to compare. I along with kyleH am still using a functioning hood. Using the cover and fans.
