Was going to be ambitious this morning. Took a freshwater tank and a gallon of vinegar. Placed used Skimmer in Tank with water and vinegar. Waited Cleaned outside of skimmer body then plugged in pump......., SMOKE EVERYWHERE!! I only had it plugged in about 3 seconds when the smoke started pouring out.

I was lucky. I decided to do this outside on my patio. The smell was horrid.

My recommendation is, if you buy used equipment from someone (even on MARSH) - Check the operation of it before you pay for it and bring it home. 2. always do vinegar cleaning outside. The smell of burning vinegar and pump motors is a special kind of yuck.... you don't want in your home.
:furious3:

FYI, I am not blaming anyone other than myself. I should have checked the pump motor prior to paying for it.

(Be seeing you later Dennis)

If the seller isn't eager to show you their used equipment works before you pay for it there may be a problem. :)

^^^Well sometimes you meet people at some random parking lot and it's hard to find a plug to test. ;):D I bought a Mag pump a while back for my water change stations which would trip the GFCI. Since it had electrical issues I threw it away, too lazy to call the member for $50.

yes. I even have a 110vlt outlet in my vehicle....... It was not a skimmer bought from a parking lot :spy: that got me. It was one that came with a bunch of other equipment. No worries though. I was going to clean it up and sell it at the swap meet. In a way, I am glad it happened to me when it did. I would have felt bad if I had sold it to someone else in that condition.
So, FWIW, If I sell anything I have tested it.....:2020:

Again, I am not blaming anyone. Used equipment is a gamble.
