I have a Banded Serpent star in my 92 gallon reef tank. I have about 100lbs of rock and plenty places to hide. Other fish includes a clown, yellow tang, black tip damsels, a 6 line wrasse and a long fin cardinal.

I really want to add a trigger or two. Looking at a Clown and a Huma Trigger.

I feel like the other fish can handle themselves but my concern is the star fish being whopped up by the triggers.

Thoughts? Input?

Thanks in advance.

triggers together is usually a problem... i had a huma and he would spit sand all over everything along with terrorizing my wrasse clown and tang

Triggers are predators of most invertebrates, including brittlestars. eventually it would not end well.

IMO, one of the single worst things you could do is add a clown trigger to that tank. Your other fish most certainly could not handle themselves :( and the tank footprint is not suitable. I am assuming it is a 92 corner tank but even if it is not...I doubt it is more than 5' long.

Really, truly, not trying to rain on the parade...a big aggressive fish.

Huma is a bit better but really I don't suggest it if you value your invertebrates. You've gone with a basically community fish selection. I would strongly discourage any trigger in that tank based on other inhabitants and potentially the footprint of the tank :(

Ophiura - The tank is 60" across the front. Gives the fish I have a pretty good run across the front and back.

I greatly appreciate yalls feedback and will not introduce a trigger to this tank. I was thinking this would be a bad idea but was hoping otherwise. After the post I found a helpful tool that shows different species of fish and compatibility with other marine life. And the Huma and Clown were red on all levels.

Oddly enough the Niger Trigger showed only a slight risk to inverts. Would have thought it would be even worse.

So is it activity you are looking for, or color? Do you have soft corals, LPS or SPS? Perhaps some alternative suggestions can be made.

And you have my respect for choosing the serpentstar over the trigger...

I do have a bias there.

Ophiura -

My goal is to have a nice collection of colorful corral and approx 10 colorful fish. Right now we only have various types of mushrooms but have been looking around to see what corral we want to go with next. Next fish we plan to get is a Royal Blue Tang and another clown or two. The wife and I like color and unique patterns.

Basically you download the zip file with folders onto your computer. You can then scroll thru them and use the color reference at the bottom to learn compatibilities. I went one step further and loaded photos onto my iPhone and can use reference when at the LFS.

So is this a corner tank or is it a rectangular tank? Just to be absolutely clear for me.

I am assuming you have Scott Michael's marine fish book?

But some logical things to research (not all can go in but some ideas):

dwarf angel - personal preference in many regards here but flame is popular
butterflyfish -
Dottyback or gramma or other basslet - good yellow/magenta contrast that is very eye catching.
Hamlet - not a common fish but I've always liked the look
Hawkfish - flame, longnose, freckled
Foxface
flasher/fairy wrasse
anthias perhaps
tilefish are pretty cool I think

It is rectangular. It is 60"X20"tallX18"front to back.

Yes I do have that book and tomorrow I will scan the pages for your suggestions.

Thanks ..... Any input I can get is appreciated.
