I am working on setting up my new 135 and I am toying with the idea of going Bare Bottom  . I have been looking online at pic after pic and I sometimes like the look and some times I don't. Soooo...

I was thought we needed a thread that folks that went BB could post pics and give their thoughs on it. Then maybe I can quit sitting on the fence about it!!

I did DSB before IKE and loved it, however being kept out of our house for 8 days... Things got pretty rank.
The DSB was the worst smelling. Every scoop I took out totally gagged me. I swore I would not put myself or family through that again. Took me 2 long days to clean the tank out and air the house out enough that my family would finally set foot back in the house again.

Any how I'm now doing bare bottom and love it. I have a big refugium that Minh put together for me... Middle section is a DSB with about 60 lbs of sand, some LR, cheato, and some mangroves.

I like the look and I'm able to have more flow. Cleanup is much easier to... Get a little ditrutus in the tank, just put the power heads on it blow it around till you've cleaned things up and your good.

I'll try and get some pics later tonight or tomorrow....

I'm long overdue for a FTS, this one is about three or four months old, but here it is. You can click it for a larger version.

Personally, I've been without sand for near 3 years, and i've never had this kind of success. The simplicity of maintenance and amount of coral growth I have is very satisfying.

WOW! I love the look of that! Did you get the pillar look by drilling the rock and pitting rods in them? And is that the white cutting board stuff on the bottom?

Feb TOTM in RC has a bare bottom tank. And he has that cool shelf rock. Something that really struck me was what he had to do to make that rock work. Something that I beleive someone in here was having problems with having homemade LR in his tank. He cured it first before adding to his tank when getting it running.
I beleive though for others who want to follow, is to have have a really good skimmer, and alot of flow at the bottom to circulate the waste up out of the tank, so skimmer can do its job.

Oh crvz, don't beleive I've every seen your tank.

And why in the heck haven't you had TOTM or have you?

I've done alot of votes and I don't ever remember seeing that tank.

Great tank!
