If ur main drain is not partially closed, it's gonna Flush the box. So ur on the right track there.

As far as most of the flow going down the open channel, this could be a few things.

The air line is submerged on the open channel.

Your main drain is too deep under the water line in sump. (Needs to be an inch or less)

The valve on the main drain is too closed or the main drain is clogged

You may not be purging air on ur main drain which will force ur open channel to take a big volume vs a small volume..

Try those and report back. :)

Ok, so I went back to the old school Bean Animal with the ER as the dump on start up and the Open Channel as the last "Ohh shi%%%%, save my floor", and im happy to report that after running it this way again...I'm more happy with start up. I just put the ER pipe like 1/2" above the waterline. It's nice.

Thanks d2..

I finally had time to play with my overflow and I figured it out. The drains coming into the sump are too far under water. As soon as I cut them down I saw a big gush of air and the drains starting working great. Thanks for all the help

Great discussion guys.

I recently set-up a Bean overflow basically as Reefaholic and reefer have it, and need to see if the D2mini corrections would be better for me.

That's the biggest mistake made with the beananimal overflow. No more than 1 inch below the waterline with drains.

I've ran it every way possible and going back to the original old school way is the best for start ups IMO because it allows your main drain to level out better. Your ER drain will dump water "without flushing the box" until the main drain "levels out/stabilizes."

The other way using the open channel drain as your secondary will force that drain to flush the box once or twice on start up before the main drain takes over. You also need to have this drain / hole drilled higher or the street elbow cut down so that it will be higher and less likely to "steal" the siphon for the main drain. Having the hole drilled higher or cutting down your fitting will ensure that the main drain will start the siphon first.
