I'm about to get back into reefing after spending about 5 years or so off. When I had my last reef tank up t-5s and metal halides were all the rage, but it seems LEDs seem to be the more economical way to go now. What's a good setup for all around coral growth for everything, sps, lps, softies etc that wont break the bank?

Hi Lyman, I appreciate your advice. I was looking today and saw there is a non HD model out there aswell. Any idea what the benefits are when compared to each other? Thanks

I believe that the non HD model will not work if your wifi goes down.. could be wrong but I think I read that.

I have the RapidLED conversion in the top of my biocube 32 & I can grow anything. It's actually aggravating that everything seems to grow fine in that tank & my larger tank (with way more $ dumped into it) doesn't perform near as well.

LEDs are not necessarily more economical than T5s!!!! I have been working up a budget for a new upcoming build and for say a 7ft wide tank I would need 4 of the Radion XR30 G4Pros which have a max power usage of 190watts each X 4 that would be 760 watts. If I run 36" 8 bulb T5s they use 312 watts each X 2 and that is only 624 watts. Perhaps you could get away with 3 Radions but fewer than throw more shadows...which is why I like T5s. There are other LEDs...The new Kessil A360X uses less power and still has a 24"x24" spread with only 90watts max. Even if you needed since of them that is only 540 watts.

Of course I DO like the pop that the LEDs have and if you add a led lightbar like the Reefbrite strip then that would add another 200 watts to my T5 total. :)

I have the Rapid Led kit in my Bio Cube and it does great. Led's are the most popular as they have great color/growth and there is no additional cost for yearly bulb replacement.

If you cant find a rapid led kit, you can use an Ai Prime, Ai hydra 26, Kessil fixture or a radion xr15.
