I was curious what would be considered the best method when switching the type of salt used. I know for most of us once we find a type of salt we're happy with we will stick with it. However, say you decide you want to go to a different blend, or type due to an issue with your current choice, run out and cannot get your brand locally, or cost factors or what ever. I'm curious what people would do in these types of situations. Mostly because there can be a significant difference in the water parameters with a different salt blend compared to what you have been using.

Would you just use up what you have then switch over once you run out?

Would you start blending the new type with the old when you're running low to make the change more smooth for the tank?

Or would you do something different if you wanted to or had to switch salt mixes?

Depends on the parameters and elements in the new salt vs the old salt. I personally wouldn't blend them.

If it was softies, I'd probably just switch over if the Alk wasn't jumping from 6 to 11. If it was a tank full of acro's I'd try to either supplement what's needed or let the levels come down on their own to that of the new salt.

I’ve blended in the past. But if it came down to it and I didn’t have the same salt on hand I would just match the big 3.
