Well Friday my dad and i went to stop to get some fish food. When we walked out our lock had been pushed in and our 30-06 hunting rifle was gone. We talked to the manager and he said that this is the 8th time he has heard this in less than 2 weeks. Do not go to this store! It was obvious they took little time to take it because we also had a 12 gage shotgun in the back next to it and it was still there.

well, it's not the store's fault. unfortunately, there's nothing the store can do to prevent a crime committed in their parking lot. perhaps they (or their corporate offices) or the police could get someone to patrol the area, but it's not their fault or their responsibility. obviously if it were either, then they would be required by law to do something about it.

regardless...you shouldn't tell someone to not shop somewhere because of an event that happened to you that was out of the store's hands.

well they wouldnt even be honest to me that they had video cameras. I talked to someone who had the same thing happen and he had to get the cops to come down to look at the cameras because they wouldnt admit they had them.

Let me refrase what i said. Do not shop there unless you have a third eye out for theives. I just do not want someone to deal with this to.

Honestly, the cop/you/management cant do anything with the videos anyways. They're also not gonna hand over the video to just anyone requesting it. Also, you cant just go around Houston worrying about thieves cuz they're everywhere.

+1...they won't give you anything. not the video, not a description, nothing. i worked in retail for years and when we had thefts in the parking lot, we could not and would not give out video tape or any information. it's just the policy of a lot of establishments.

not to mention, the property that the petco is on is not owned by petco. the land/parking lot/store is leased to petco by a property management company.

but, you can file a police report and wait for nothing to happen (that's what usually is the case). it sucks that it happened, and i feel bad for you, but i don't think it's constructive to blame/bash petco for a theft in their parking lot. it happens everywhere all the time. you just have to be careful what you put in your car or what is visible in your car.

I know that it looks like I am trying to bash them i just dont want people to be blind sided like we were. We have filed a police report also. The thing that does bother me about this particular petco is that they knew it was happening and would not even as mutch as mention it to anyone.

that sucks dude. But as they say it's not fair to blame the store. IF you read a couple post town you will see it happened to me at Fish Gallery. It's not the stores fault but the freaking low life theives. They are everywhere.

I also have to say, the video most places have is useless. When my car was broken into once, I did get to see the tape. Even if I was in it, I wouldn't have been able to ID myself.

Never been to the petco in question but if they are still servicing their customers and providing a good product you shouldn't bash them. If we stopped doing business with everyone that had a breakin in their parking lot, we would all stay home.

not suggesting anything vigilante or anything, but i would set up a sting. get a buddy to leave something in the car, park 2 cars around in the parking lot and wait... if there have been 12 thefts that occured in two weeks, it should not take more that a couple of days to track down your man and a couple of days more to get your rifle back lol.

I thought of that to but the problem will be they have seen us and now we know they are armed. Also we would have to wait until they cram the lock in again so the damage would be done to there car too.

If there were burglaries 8 times in 2 weeks, then all the stores in that center should be hiring a security patrol to drive around. That would pretty much end it. I do think the store bears some responsibility for the safety of its customers in its parking lot. Especially if they know something is happening so frequently...

Sorry about your loss, deepsea.

Also anyone know how they jammed the lock into the door? Wish there were some way to prevent it.

Ok.. what do you want, an employee standing at the entrance telling everyone that they have 'thieves' working the parking lot?

It's just a matter/symptom of the way things have become. It's become a simple fact of life, DO NOT leave anything of value in your vehicle, much less anything in sight/view.

<shrug> My sons car was run-over in a wal-mart paking lot a week before Ike. Cops came, checked with wal-mart...viewd the video etc. 3 days ago, we got a call from the insurance co, stating they believed they were going to be able to recover the 'losses' incurred.
Rarely, but sometimes things work out...

I have auto insurance that covers property theft. Course there's the deductible so hope they steal something valuable. Maybe I should put all my valuables in the truck and head to this Petco.

well the gun and the case together is 510$ and the dedudtable is 500$. Also homeowners has to cover it. And the damage done to the truck is 320$ and the deductable is 500$ so we are screwed.

Being a gun lover and houston resident I probably would not have left it in plain view.

Secured in the trunk or covered with a jacket or something.

A lot of the theives are dumb@sses but if you let them who's to blame?

Had a friends car get broken in to and they stole his $50 radio. Yet left over $1k worth of books in the backseat along with his $300 jacket which had $500 in cash in the wallet. All piled on the back seat floor.
