As some of you guys and gals know besides reefing I am competitive shooter. A fellow national ranked shooter just had his safe and ammo stolen out of his house. The crooks used "golf balls" to roll a 36 gun safe out of his house.
He came home to hundreds of golf balls and a kick in back door. His comment was "I never thought someone could move the dam thing"
It happend midday today in the memorial area of Houston

Sorry to hear that from your friend.
But this should be a easy case as a "Hole in one" just ask and trace who bought hunderds of golf balls in the last week or so?

Wasn't bolted to the floor? Feel sorry for the guy, but a safe is not that hard to move if it is not bolted to the foundation. Even then, a committed professional thief will manage, but it will generally stop amateurs / kids / junkies.
A home alarm system is always a good idea as well!

I moved my 26 gun cannon like that from the road, up my driveway, thru my house and into where i keep it. Took me 10 mins with my kids thru the balls infront of it.

Sorry, but he should of had that sucker bolted down. I used 8in long harded bolts that flared out on the end. I messed up on one, had to use a 12k winch and a f250 and a huge pole to get it out, even then i tore up the foundation it sat on.

Very true and having two large trained dogs just tops it off. Lord help anyone that's dumb enough to break into my house. My GSD will eat them alive.

Unless you spend an absolute fortune a committed pro will get in it (even then he probably will).
get something heavy, keep it out of sight, and bolt it to the floor.
almost no home safes have the appropriate ratings to be really secure from a committed thief, but they will deter kids / thugs / junkies.

I'm leasing a townhouse so until I decide to buy it I can't bolt anything. The safe will be in a closet and was thinking something heavy. I know that if they really want to get in they will but hopefully by then the police will be at my home.

Depending on what you consider an absolute fortune I don't agree with this at all. There's plenty of safes out there that when secured properly are nearly indestructible.

Take a look at UL burglary resistant ratings on home safes and see what they entail and how few safes are actually rated.
30 minutes with some basic hand tools would get a committed theif into most. Air compressor or portable cutting torch and you are into any of them. They all have welded seams that can be broken with enough know how and motivation.
like I said, they will deter junkies and amatuers, but if someone knows what they are doing most home gun safes are an annoyance. 10 ga steel is no challenge for a portable oxygen and acetylene torch that can be had for a few hundred dollars at any HD or Lowes.

Oh, btw I have 1000 lb 26 gun safe, it is built like a tank, but certainly not indestructible.

Not at all. I would get a middle of the road safe, conceal it and secure it somehow. They will absolutely stop most home invaders, b/c they are random. If someone knows you have a 50k worth of guns and targets you it is a different situation.

the effectiveness difference between a $1000 safe and a $5000 safe is not as big as you would hope.

i would assume the original post in this thread is describing a targeted home invasion.
