What is the general thought on using bio balls I was told yesterday that they build up a lot of crap and can be bad for the tank in the long run.

BUT don't do it all at once.

Take out about 10 % - 20% a week to be safe.
You might have a lot of beneficial bacteria built up in them and if your tank is relying on that, you don't want to yank it all at once time. Doing it slow will allow a build up elsewhere.
