If there was a LFS that had cultured black pearl oysters that were seeded with a nucleus, how many of you would be interested in them? Also what would you be willing to pay for them?Remember there is a pearl growing inside.

Hi, It's James.

Excellent idea, but while black pearl oysters grow well in lagoons in Tonga, they don't do so well in the average reef aquarium (I'd love to hear otherwise).

I would be interested in giving it a try.

Cheers
James

I probally have like 10 or 15 really small pearls from oysters that i suchked while working in a seafood reasturant in Port Aransas, TX. This thread made me go look at them to see if they were still there. I did give like half of them to my mom and sister no idea if they still have theirs.

I agree with James on this one, I wouldn't think they would grow that well in the typical home aquarium.

And I hate to be crude but, dont you have to KILL them to collect the prize? Kinda run contrary to our overall goal, dont it?

Not realy cause you enjoy them untill they die. And when they die you get a pearl its kinda the one thing in your tank that keeps on giving

So then what you are saying is that you just have to have patients and wait till they die :) So then I can summize that the better job you do of keeping them alive, the larger the perl will be on the other end :) Maybe this does play right into the conservation minded reefer :)

oysters do not do well in aquariums. otherwise, i'd keep a couple oysters and scallops. sadly, it doesn't work out that way. :( i really like the way they look, regardless of what's inside.

I've eaten an oyster with a little pearl inside. Mighty nasty little shock to the tooth, I must say.

While innovative, I wouldn't pay more than 20 bucks.
I would however be ineterested in giving it a shot :)

Does anyone know how long it takes for a pearl to grow? Are we talking months, years? I think it would be fun to try if the price was reasonable. Not everyone gets to have a set of balck pearl earrings that they grew themselves!

I think that would be so cool to grow my own earrings! I'd give it a shot. I might even be willing to do a species specific tank for them :D
