So I just noticed today this black sponge that I've never noticed before. Is it anything I should remove? It's the only spot I have seen it and it has to have popped up in the last few weeks. Sorry for poor photos. I couldn't get good pics since I have no camera. Any info on these?

I also have another sponge that has kind of taken over one rock. This has been in tank for a while though. It is rough to the touch and tough like. It's even grown through the sand bed. Any thoughts?

How fast is it growing (the black one)?

So if you look online most of what you find says get rid of it as they will grow over corals..

Yours looks like it is isolated on a rock on the sand bed. If so, I would be tempted to leave it.. I prefer having as much bio diversity as possible.. yes I am one of those people that saves bristle worms (great detritus consumers).

If it starts encroaching upon a coral I would cut it back..or if it is growing super fast then I might intervene..

I had some on a single rock in my sons nano, we just trimmed it back with a razor when it started getting to close to the zoa's that were on the rock..

Yea I like having stuff that is different. I am not sure how fast it's growing as i just noticed it recently even though it's in the front of the tank.😮 I'll keep an eye on it and see. I'm almost certain it wasn't there a few weeks ago though lol. Let's hope it stays isolated. 😄

I have the same on growing all over a hammer skeleton. It didn't do much till I started dosing KZ sponge power and now it's quickly spreading onto the rocks. What is a quick sponge kill? Can I inject some peroxide or something into it or will that do nothing? What about kalk paste?

I don't know of a quick kill "in tank" and I don't think it would be good to try to kill it "in tank" as it may release a toxin. I'm assuming KZ sponge power probably has silica and other nutrients in it to encourage growth.. so I would stop dosing that for sure.

If you can pull the skeleton it is on out you can kill it off... we just used a razor blade to cut it back occasionally. I would offer that we had some limpets that came in on some chaeto and managed to make their way to the aquarium. They ended up settling on the sponge and consuming it.

I had a similar sponge get out of hand on a plug once. I used kalkwasher paste in tank. I didn't have a problem. It was about 2"square in a 210gallon tank so I can't speak for toxins.

I'm hesitant to cease the sponge power because the good it has provided outweighs the bad at this point. I maynhit it with a little kalk paste and see what happens
