Just a few years ago I was buying them for 10/$35. Today, I saw them for $17 each plus tax. Is anyone else seeing these prices or was it just the store I was at? Is that just the cost of them now? I was just looking for some cheap fish to add bioload.

That sounds a little high, but if they're decent size, not too bad. Live Aquaria is charging 11.99 for small, meaning 1/2-1". They even have small ones from Africa for 39.99 - I don't know if they look any different.

Although I buy everything locally except larger equipment in my opinion LFS shoots itself in the foot for charging so much markup. I would lower my prices some to create more interest and beat the competitors.

If they are selling a fish for $15 which means their cost is $5 (based on few wholesalers I know).
I do understand it’s a business and has to make money but I think greed also plays a big role.

I know a little something about sales - the small distribution company I consult with had revenue of ~$800m in 2022.

Unfortunately it dosent work that way. There's alot of unknown cost that people don't understand. I almost drove myself out of business lowering my cost just to try to beat the competition in hopes that people will buy. For example holding cost. There is no shelf life for live fish and coral. If they die its a 100% loss. Plus if a store QTs and holds for 30 days. That cost must go into the sale of the fish or coral. There's chemicals lights etc that goes in the cost of the fish or coral as well. And importing is getting more and more expensive. If you find a fish at $5 from a wholesaler they have to ship it to you so that $5 can turn into 10 really quick depending on how tight the wholesaler packs. Then you have to acclimate to your store water and there is a cost to that, that must go into the cost of the fish. Then you hold for 30 days and monitor. That goes into the cost of the fish. And much more. That's why when I do bulk orders for customers they get a cheaper price because I don't have to do all the QT work and holding.

And I get that, but at what point does the hobby just become cost-prohibitive? I go to Papasitos with the wife the other day and two beers each with fajitas for one (a half pound of meat with a side of beans and rice) plus a dessert is $130 with the tip. Then I go to the fish store and a green chromis is $17. This is not sustainable for both the skirt steak and fish industry alike.

We go to Papasitos Wednesdays - 1 lb beef or chicken fajitas under $50 - at the end of the night the bill is still over a $100 but at least we feel like we got a deal. :bounce::noidea::lmao:
