I have been reading some stuff on bulkheads and it appears that there are mixed reviews on the installation of bulkheads. Many suggest to put the gasket on the dry side and just as many say to put the gasket on the wet side. So my question is where do you all have your gaskets installed on your bulkheads? I will be installing them on my tank today and am just curious as to what you guys do. Thanks.

Gasket should always be on the side with the flange, not on the nut side, otherwise when tightening the nut the gasket will try to push out from under the nut or deform in some way and will most likely leak at some point.

excellent point fishrman. Now if I place the flange on the inside then the gasket goes to the inside (wet side) but if I place the flange on the outside the gasket goes to the outside (dry side). Anyone have a preference as to which way is most efficient leak wise and provides the best longevity of the gasket.

Brandon,

If a bulkhead is installed and left installed without the nut being loosened or the bulkhead being turned from screwing another fitting into it, it shouldn't matter much if you put the flange with gasket on the wet side or the dry side. It should continue to hold it's seal indefinitely unless moved.
Mostly what should decide where you place the flange side or the tail side of the bulkhead is the amount of room you have for the tail end and access to the nut for possible replacement in the future.

Silicone should not be needed if installed properly.

There is no need to pay for silicone when you get salt creep for free.

Mine's on the inside, but I also used silicone to seal it as I was having major leakage problems.
