I want to have it sit behind my tank and circulate water from the main tank, basically like a closed loop but it will have to pull water up over the top of the tank like a siphon.

Can a little giant 3mdq do this?

Not sure, but you can always put a piece of PVC with a screw on cap so you could pour water in to "prime" it.

Yea, I'm just wondering if it will be too much strain on the pump or if it will cause it to overheat.

thats pretty useful. I feel a little more comfortable now seeing that someone is using a Mag for it.
I'd be more afraid to use the Mag than the little giant.

It can be done. I have mine set up that way with a Mak4 pump and have never had any problems.

Dangit....
Appears to be working pretty good except my pump is making a distinct buzzing or ticking sound.
Not just the normal hum sound. I think the pump needs a new impeller.... AARRGGGHHHHH...
I don't want to spend $40 bucks on a new impeller for this pump, especially if thats not what is causing the sound.

You might want to take it apart and give it a good cleaning. Youl'd be surprised how quickly the impeller housing can get dirty. Soak it in viniger over night.

I did that yesterday, before that it was unusable because of the noise, sounded like the pump was gonna explode it was so loud.

The pump is getting very hot. How hot do Little Giant pumps get??

It sounds like the impeller is rubbing against the housing, I had one do that a while back. Mine was rubbing the case so much that it made a small groove where it was touching. I ended up sanding down the impeller blades a hair, after that the noise stopped and no loss of flow. As far as the motor over heating i'm not sure, my pumps get warm but never hot. Check for any obstructions that might be causeing the pump to work harder.

Switched it out to my mag7, don't have the time to mess with the little giant.
