I'm not sure what I just witnessed, but my candy cane coral started to puff smoke. I was wondering if it was actually releasing spores into my aquarium. Happened right after a water change. Anyone explain this?
I could have been spawning. Sometimes corals do this as a reaction to stress. Or it could have been coincidental to the water change and would have spawned at that time anyway. Were the lights on or off?
Yes, the lights were off, except for the office lights. On my research, there are alot of factors involved (http://www.reefs.org/library/article/coral_spawning.html). It was amazing to see this, but I didn't have enough time to grab a camera.
Lots of people have reported seeing this about an hour or so after lights off.
Somebody...(Eric B. I think)...had a video clip of coral spawning in the wild. Whole reefs smoking and releasing small phosphoresent eggs. It was really cool!
