I bought some API AMMO-CARB. it says that it helps with ammonia and makes the water crystal clear. Haven't used it yet. Is it safe?

I think as long as its activated carbon, it should be fine; at least that's how I understand it. Then again, I've only been filtering carbon for about 4 hours now.

BTW, since starting this a few hours ago, some of my soft coral polyps that have hardly opened up for the past month are almost fully out! :D

I started running carbon today, thanks to funkmaster. It sure does not take long to notice a difference in water clarity. I’m sold.

If you don't have a reactor can the active carbon be put in the carbon bags and used inside of a Eheim filter system???

Carbon works best if it's put in a reactor or canister filter. It can be put in a filter sock and placed in a sump/fug but I never got good results that way. You want the water to be forced through the carbon for maximum efficiency.

Not all activated carbon is the same. Carbon is made from different things and can be activated differently.

Cheap gac (granulated activated carbon) can leech ammonia into the water. Randy holmes Farley did several comparisons pitting different carbons against each other.

Ideally you want to have slow flow in a reactor. Im lazy and found just putting carbon in a mesh bag works good enough. And replacing it only takes 2-3 mins. Putting it into the filter sock where the overflow water enters the sump just causes the carbon to break up. Leaving small carbon pieces everywhere.
