There is a terrific article in the latest edition of Reefkeeping Magazine by Eric Borneman. It concerns captive propagation of Caribbean corals. Although these corals are currently under strict permit restrictions, there is the possibility that they may become available in the future. Let us hope so.

If you are interested, this article is very good reading. Enjoy

I was talking to Eric and some other people involved in this project(coral reintroduction to the FL Keys) a couple of weeks ago when I was down in the keys for a coral disease class at mote marine lab. Don't count on caribbean corals being available in the aquarium trade anytime soon. I'll explain more later when I have some more time and can read the whole article and tell you what I know.

I understand that the availability will not be there in the near future, but hopefully with the efforts that are underway we may see them sometime in the future.

I, for one, am keeping my fingers crossed.

Actually, as it stands now any of the propagules can be sold to the aquarium trade according to Billy Causey head of the FKNMS.This is the final verdict that he told Eric in Okinawa. So, we do plan on releasing cultured coral at the appropriate time to various outlets so we do not overstock ourselves. The aquarium trade is just the last potential outlet. The coral (even the propagules)are really intended for the research community and also to establish a coral database/bank so that we can offer replicates and any pertinant information when any interested party inquires.Hope everyone enjoys the pictures I will keep everyone posted with new ones here soon.

What I remember Billy saying 2 weeks after Okinawa is that they did not want the corals getting into the trade yet. Though there are some corals in public aquariums(colombus zoo, omaha zoo, florida aquarium), these are(will be) used for the reintroduction project that they are working on out in they Keys and other research projects. He was also saying about what should be done about corals entering the aquarium trade from florida aquacultured live rock and that they haven't figured out exactly what to do, especially with Acropora spp. because they are in debate about whether the 3 species should be placed on the threatened or endangered list.
