Anyone have any suggestions on how to catch a gorilla crab. I walked by the tank last night and I saw one start to scurry back into the live rock. It was between the size of a quarter and a 50-cent piece. I've already had 2 small fish go missing. I think I've found my culprit.

Similar body shape as an emerald crab. The color is kinda brownish-red. The pinchers are bigger than a emerald, and they have black tips. I believe there's pics posted on RC of them. Just do a search for gorilla crab. They're known fish/shrimp/crab killers.

with a trap...octopus...or my fav. turn him into a shish-kabob...you can also watch to see what hole he goes into and take that rock out...dump just a lil seltzer water into his hole....he should come running out....

I had a nasty Emerald Crab that I once needed to get rid of. Someone on RC gave me a pretty good method. All you need is a small glass and some shrimp or bait. Just put the shrimp into the glass and place it on the bottom of the tank. You may want to prop it against a rock so that the crab can crawl into it. Just set it...and forget it.
Once the crab climbs into the glass, he is unable to climb back up the smooth surface. What you do with him from that point on is up to you.
I did this and caught my culprit overnight.

I tried the jar method in sort of a lazy way. I didn't have any table shrimp or anything solid enough to tie down in the bottom of the jar so I tried turning the jar on it's side and put a piece of krill in it, and just watched it off and on for a couple hours. No luck. I'll have to got get a couple shrimp today after work I guess.

Here's a pic of what I'm talking about.

I had a similar problem when trying to catch a fish, the bait wouldn't sink. I put a nickel in a paper towel and tied it up with a string. Then I tied the string to the shrimp.

Just do not use a penny! I don't think you should use any metal object in your aquarium. Use a small piece of rock.

I cought mine by hand - fed them with lights off and then waited and watched - saw where it lived and then went after it - picture the scuba gear - well notr quite but get the picture - got it on the second try - might try a plastic bottle with top and bottom cut off and then get crab in opend and use bottle to trap it - it worked for me and I caught three of them - good luck - might have to lift the rock it lives under
