I was wondering what your oppinions are or if any of you have ever tried this and what was the out come... or if anyone has any better suggestion please feel free to let me know. Thanks

Check valves are ok for a backup, but I wouldnt depend on one.
A better option is to drill a small siphon break hole in your return line at or just below the waters surface(or two holes for safety). When the water level drops to the point of the hole it will break the siphon.

You will still need some room in your sump for water , but not too much room.

check valves will crap out after time...best to install a siphon break that will allow some air to siphon back to sump but will stop at a certain level. All you have to do is drill a hole just under the water line on your return line. When the water reaches the hole air is allowed into the line causing the siphon to stop.
