Not all clownfish will host all anemones, and vice-versa. There are some preferences among the two creatures.

This is another link to a couple compatibility charts. The top chart is compatiblity between fish, the next one is clownfish and anemones. . Remember, not all clowns will take to an anemone, some tank raised ones especially don't know what an anemone is!

Judging by KarenB's pics, tank born/raised they know what they want. Granted they might not be the same kind.......

You missed the point.

What I stated was that not all of them will host. This means that some will not...no matter what type of anemone you have in there. The urge to host is stronger in some than others and no one really knows why.

One thought is that the more generations they are away from "wild caught", the less strong the hosting instinct. Of course there are exceptions to every "rule".

As aquarists about all we can do for these animals is try to match, as closely as possible, those conditions that would normally exist in the wild for each species. Which is where compatibility between fish and anemone species is important.

To add to the confusion, many common names of anemones (And some clowns) can be misleading. There is more than one species commonly sold as a Sebae anemone. The Heteractis crispa and the Heteractis malu. Then theres the ones just not identified correctly :(

I have two pink skunk clowns and two false perculas in my 180. For the first nine months that I had the skunks, they hosted in a sebae which was located on the far right side of my tank. The false perculas would not host in anything, and stayed on the left side of the tank (There was a RBTA on the left side of the tank). For reasons unknown, the female percula finally decided to host in my RBTA after more than 8 months of them being in the tank together. However, when I moved everything into my new 180, the skunks took up residence in the RBTA and the false Percs are again homeless. :?

I've had a Heteractis crispa for over a year and my clown ignores it...

Good luck,
Steve

I have had f. percula's host a green carpet and hammer coral at different times. But since the hammer coral died in a massive brown jelly infection about 8 months ago, one of the clowns jumped ship, and the other one is homeless.

I bought a Seabae Clown for my Seabae anenome last night and within 1 minute of releasing him into the tank he was all snuggled up in the anenome, now i might be looking for a new home for the False Percula I have.
