My neighbor gave me this clown trigger 4 weeks ago. He was eating like a pig. He is in a tank with a damsel and an engineering gobi. I still can't believe he died. The last owner had him for 4 years. He always seemed hungry. I was feeding the three fish the pellets the first owner said was the only thing he fed the tank. Two very large pinches every other day. The dead body looked perfect besides feeling skinny in his stomach. But the head was fat. I'm used to seeing fish get body heads/ whole body look thin if they aren't getting enough food. I have yet to see the engineer gobi eat.

tank parameters 77F 1.020 8.0 pH 0 nitrates.

The only thing I did this morning was add top off water because the tank was blowing bubbles. Uggh this is a bummer. The clown trigger was the only reason for keeping this 30 gallon bio cube.

What do you guys think killed him? He always lived with the engineer gobi.

It's possible he just got old? Hard to say without seeing him and how he was acting prior to his passing.
Did he come with that tank or was he from another tank? If so, what size? A 30g biocube seems kind of small for a trigger to me. They usually like to swim A LOT.
Did you check your ammonia? Is it possible that you could have had an ammonia spike with the new fish? How many fish are in that tank and is it established? Ammonia poisoning often causes a lot of unexplained fish loss. It is silent, invisible, and deadly. Check your ammonia and report back.
Sorry for your loss.

lol you wouldn't believe the fish in the tank before I got it. a 9" foxface, a 9" engineer gobi, a giant yellow tang, a giant marine beta, two clownfish, the clown trigger,

I found the problem. The heater exploded. I had a spare too and was thinking of replacing it uggh. I even bought a new thermometer since i thought the water was cold.

So the heater exploded... Did the water get too cold? below 76 is too cold for a coral reef fish from my experiences. I have one of those electronic digital thermometers so I can check the temp of the tank now and then. One of the best investments I ever made and not pricy.

It was the aqueon pro heater. It split down the side and a bunch of stuff came out and killed the fish. They died from teh stuff, not the temperature./

I think they're referring to the swimming room these large fish require, not the cleanliness of the water.

They all where in there. They all had scars from rubbing against the live rock. TGhe yellow tang is missing most of its fins. He got them all tiny 4 years ago.

Amazing no one or fish got electricuted. I would not put a trigger with a yellow tang that is like putting Mohamed Allie with Sister Theresa carrying a rolling pin ha ha

Beautiful fish, and the heater killed him :(. He was sooo much happier with room to swim without the fat pig of a fox face taking up all the space

So what ya going to get to replace him? Safe to say you will never have long live happy fish in a 30 gallon. I have never had a heater split like that on me. I have had mine just burn out with age... no harm done as well as accidently have the heater glass crack during transport.... not in the aquarium.
