Made a little more progress.

Decided to do a little work on the sump before I fired everything up. It was pretty much an open box. I wanted to add a divider but knowing my tendency to want to change things up from time to time, I didn't want to glue one in and be stuck with that config forever. so I took some "L" shaped acrylic

and made a channel so that I could slide my divider in and out. I also made it wide enough so that I could sandwich a piece of filter material between the divider and a piece of egg crate for increased pump protection and to help with micro bubbles. I still need to go pick up some filter material to see how well it does with the bubbles.

After that was done decided it was time to fire up the system.

Pick of the tank with system running and sand in place.

Been a while so I guess it's time for a little bit of an update.
Picked up a used BRS double reactor from a fellow Marsh member and will be running GFO and Carbon. I had planned to remove the metal top bracket and replace it with a plastic one since it will be sitting in my sump. Once the metal bracket was off, the unit was sturdy enough that I didn't see a need for any additional brackets.

Just a little sign of progress in the tank, my red monti frag that I picked up in July has shown quite a bit of growth in the 2 months it's been in the tank as are all my monti frags but this one is the most dramatic.

This pics were taken 7/26/12

I finally got around to modifying my plumbing to run the GFO/Carbon reactor and the calcium reactor. I didn't want to add pumps (heat) to the system so I am running them off my pan world circulation pump. Below are some pictures of the manifold I built and the gfo/carbon reactor in place. Will set up the calcium reactor sometime this week I hope.

Also looks like I'm going to be building a fish trap this week to try to catch my clown tang. That sucker is mean and I don't think I want to add anything else to the tank before he's out.

Time for a build update. This time its mainly pictures. I snapped a couple pics not that I've added a few frags. We will see what the future holds on their progress. Please pardon the bad pics. I have a great camera but I haven't put any effort into mastering aquarium photography.

Making some good progress it seems. Practice with your camera by taking weekly pics of your corals growth. It's fun to look back and see how much they've grown.

Cobra, did that lovely long-polyped purple stylo come from inigo montoya? I think I bought that frag's clone.

Also, I happen to be in the process of setting up the very same-sized tank (150 5x2x2). It's a hard set of dimensions to come by in a used condition! I had to troll Craigslist for 3 months.

Anyway, before I fill it with water I was thinking of how much I'm going to hate that massive center-brace (HUGE!). Mind sharing the supplier and/or method of how you replaced it with the clean-looking powder-coated metal bit? That would be PERFECT for my setup. I assume it's held up since your tank is still full of water :)

Thanks for compliments. I am taking my time and having fun with this build.

Rlpardue,

Yes our Purple stylo corals are indeed related.

I know what you mean about finding the tank. I got lucky and someone on here was selling my tank. Mine was as in ok shape but needed some work. I redid the secondary seal on the tank and put in a new overflow.

As for the brace, I cut it out while I had the top trim off but you should be able to get it out of there with the trim on. Once I put the trim back on, I stopped by Home Depot and picked up some angle iron and a couple round steel rods from the hardware isle. I came home, cut the angle iron to about the same width as the brace was, taped a piece to the front trim and one to the back to hold it in place and then cut each rod to line up with the outside edge of the angle iron. A buddy of mine welded it for me which took all of about 5 minutes...10 if you include plugging in the welder and I came home to make sure it was a tight fit. Water tested the tank with it in place before powder coating just to make sure it worked and then, once i drained the freshwater, I took it to the powdercoater and that was it. I have been very pleased with the increased light penetration and the ease of getting to all parts of the tank.

Let me know if you need help.
